If Finland is so great, why do they have the highest suicide rate in Western Europe?

Uh.... because.... uh....

Finland is better than the US! You can't argue with this survey and insert your own statistics. Stop doing that.

Perhaps light is an issue? For instance doesn't Alaska have the highest suicide rate for a US state?

Yep. Alaska is #1!

The top ten switch around every year, but if you'll notice, they're all similar states. High concentrations of guns in people who are spread thin.

Light probably has nothing to do with it since Colorado gets something like 300+ days of sun every year and NM, AZ, and NV are all at the top of the list too.

Just the other day I was driving through one of many many ghettos, sneering at their sight and thinking to myself, what happened to this country. Had to quickly get my mind back on the road, to ensure that I was alert to not be shot; which made me realize another point. In the US, run down and economically disadvantaged areas the norm, the idolized wealthy areas are actually an exception in most towns, counties and states. Yet in AUS, it’s the total opposite. Modern clean middle class and wealthy areas are the norm; the exception is the poor areas. I know, I know, some will roll their eyes when seeing AUS, but do you want me to hide this reality?

Many [no names] seem to look at the GDP or the number of millionaires and think this country is great [the land of opportunity]. Yet, while doing so, fail to see or even acknowledge the substantial plight of the rest – the majority. I already posted an article the other week illustrating the huge disparity in wealth, where 80% of Americans are left to fight for 15% of the wealth available to them; something that is signature characteristic of third world countries might I add.

What's so comical is that the same people who go on about individualism, conveniently cluster together as a country, when it suits their views. There is nothing America about you guys, after all you guys preach to-each-his-own daily; therefore, you will be analyzed and judged on a per person basis period. Many have ridiculed AUS or Canada's property prices, yet for 90% of Americans, 62% of your wealth is tied into your home. With this in mind, now think about the median price of a house here.

Why is Q.O.L so poor here? Let’s take one aspect as an example. Infrastructure is a good 20 to 30 years behind first world countries, crumbling or non-existent. A large percentage of cities are crime cesspools and reminiscent of a foregone era. Tens of millions are living in poverty, yet still, you guys want to debate Q.O.L. I didn't need any report to figure this out. I can just drive 1 hour in any direction of the country’s capital and see it with my own eyes. Now, if I was to drive over 10 hours, it gets really depressing and the Q.O.L gap widens greatly.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I actually meant lack of light. I'm guessing there are at least a few months of the year where Finland and (southern)Alaska only get a few hours of light a day. I'm sure that can lead to depression.

I drive through ghettos every day too on my way home.....oh wait those are vineyards...its so hard to tell the difference!

People don't live in vineyards. CA is probably one of the best examples of my argument. Since for obvious reasons we cannot hire a bus and drive around, I have previously illustrated the huge difference using something as simple as google streetview.

California has the equivalent of half Australia's population living in poverty, something noted by your republican governor of all people.
