Hello,

I am going to have my interview next Wednesday (July,21st), Everything went smoothly so far and I have all the documents and forms ready, I read already some experiences about the "D.day" but I was curious to know if you guys can share experiences with previous WV overstay. ( what type of questions they might ask or if it's going to be any different from couple with no major issue).

For info: my overstay was less than 180 but ..(here comes the "but") At the time I was staying at my ex-boyfriend apartment.

I am not planning on hiding this if they ask about it, of course. I am trying to prepare my interview so Rich and I can finally be together soon !

Thanks a lot

Sophie

The overstay was less than 180 days, so no automatic ban. They don't care where you stayed during that time. The subject might come up at the interview, but they won't deny your visa for this. If they even bother to ask about it then it will be something like "Why did you overstay?". Just don't say something stupid like "We needed the extra time to finish planning the terrorist attack".

So if I replied to the question "why" by "I was afraid my ex boyfriend would leave me if I came back to France". Would it be bad ? That was the reason at the time and I don't want to lie...

They probably won't even go into that much detail, Soph. Oversharing, if you go that route, isn't going to make a difference, really. But in the interest of simplicity, why don't you settle on a non-answer like, "I made a mistake; I would do things differently if I could."

When Richard was asked about his VW overstay, here's what happened:

CO: "How long did you overstay for?"

Richard: "About 5 months; it wasn't very good."

CO: "Well, no big deal." [continues shuffling papers and then approves him]

Seriously, don't worry. Remember what Jim has told you, that the overstay is not a cause for denial, and just be plain.

You say "ex boyfriend", so I'm presuming that relationship didn't work out. Anyway, I agree with twowls. Besides sharing information that the CO doesn't really need to know (and probably isn't really interested in), it gives the impression that you don't take US immigration law very seriously. You're applying for a visa based on a relationship with a US citizen. The last thing you want the CO to think is that you'd violate immigration law for the sake of a relationship. Maybe you could just say you had some personal problems that you had to take care of before you could return home.

You need to relax. It will not even come up at the interview. It's a non issue.

Welcome to America.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Thanks everybody

As the interview date come closer I am feeling more and more relax and I don't worry too much anymore. I spend my last day at the beach instead of "working" on my interview because I know that everything is going to be fine. Tomorrow I am leaving for Paris to do the medical and the interview...:) and then I am done ! :)
