California welfare recipients using state-issued debit cards withdrew more than $1.8 million in taxpayer cash on casino floors between October 2009 and last month, state officials said Thursday.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an executive order requiring welfare recipients to promise they will use cash benefits only to "meet the basic subsistence needs" of their families. The order also gave the state Department of Social Services seven days to produce a plan to reduce other types of "waste, fraud and abuse" in the welfare program.

I'll bet some of yhose same protestors were cheering the rally in the stock market while it lasted. Why? It was about the only positive thing Obama had in his defense of his handling of the economy.

If we are going to just give people free money then why do we have to make them spend it on just the basics? Let them spend it on what they want. It is usually being irresponsible that leads most to having to accept welfare so we are now going to force people to be responsible?

Terminator wants a "PROMISE"? Come on, those cards should have a block and those establishment allowing them to use my tax dollars for things other than food should be tax double.

There are a lot of healthy ppl living at my expense, Welfare should be provided for an x amount of time.

I said, terminate the assistance for those that abuse them.

You can't legislate on how benefits are used if you are issuing debit cards. Stop issuing debit cards and award the benefits in a manner that isn't straight cash.
