with regular maintenance most cars will. you'll notice people that have bad experiences with this or that make of vehicle, don't do regular maintenance.

I suspect for Legacy, "major" incident does not include failure to start on a cold day (I've tested Escorts before in Calgary--and this model was known there for stalling even when temp was anywhere below 23^oF (-5^oC), a quite common occurrence between October and March).

Taurus--large on outside, but never optimally-designed (I could not put a card-table-and-chairs set into a 1994 or 1995 Taurus' boot--which I could do easily into that of my 1995 Jetta (without folding down the seat at all; and the Taurus had less rear-legroom when set for my long-legged 6'1" frame, as compared to the Jetta), which makes me cringe at the thought of renting any Ford vehicle smaller than that (as the suboptimality will certainly be worse in those).
