Does the proof of marriage that we send in with our AOS I485 have to be a certified copy or can it be a copy of a certified copy?

It just seems like getting a certified copy would be really inconvenient and I think we'd need a couple. The county office is going to only send us one copy they said. We can go and get more later but that will just delay our application process more so I was wondering if a copy of a cert. copy would be all right...

Thanks

A copy of a certified copy can be sent with the I-1485. Have an original certified copy available for the interview.

Jims post is confusing I think so to answer easily. The one you receive from the office is usually a "certified copy", with the original being kept at the court house. You can make a copy of the marriage certificate you have (regular photocopy) and send that. Just as the instructions say.

Please read the AOS thread in my signature which answers many of your questions.

Typically you can order more copies and they'll all be certified copies. Also keep in mind that the fancy certificate that you got when you got married is usually considered a "souvenir" certificate as it doesn't have the raised seal embossment and so is not generally honored. Make sure the one you send is a copy of the raised seal document.

That said, page 4, part 12, item B of the I485 instructions read this way:

"Attach a copy of the fiance(e) pertition approval notice, a copy of your marriage certificate, and your Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Document."

Hope this helps!

Mike
