(NewsCore) - A massive sinkhole swallowed a three-story building and a house during a violent weekend storm in Guatemala City, CNN reported Monday.

The sinkhole in the northern part of the city engulfed an area larger than the size of a street intersection.

A private security guard was reportedly killed when the hole appeared, according to a local newspaper, but authorities have not confirmed the fatality.

Residents have blamed the poor underground sewage drainage system for the sinkhole and said a similar hole opened up nearby last year.

At least 144 people were killed and 53 missing after tropical storm Agatha hit Central America Saturday, AFP reported.

"The latest reports are of 118 dead in Guatemala and 17 in Honduras, while in El Salvador the death toll as of yesterday (Sunday) stood at nine, but it may have gone higher," Red Cross Pan American Disaster Response Unit chief Paco Maldonado told AFP in Panama City Monday.

"Most of the fatalities were due to landslides that collapsed buildings and peoples' homes," said Maldonado, adding that on Tuesday his unit would start sending help to the afflicted regions.

Among the dead in Guatemala were four children in a house that was swept away in a landslide, officials said.

The storm made landfall late Saturday with winds of 40mph (65kph). Though it was soon downgraded to a tropical depression, its heavy rains caused much of the damage, freeing rivers from their beds and unleashing sliding tracts of mud that swept away homes and blocked roads.

That picture looks unreal, I know it's real but ahhhhhh! Very scary looking. We get sinkholes around here and thankfully none have looked that horrifying.

Why do these things always tend to happen in SA?

Are they sucking out their ground water or something?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
