Do you need the SSN for any particular reason right now? I'm just saying since you'll end up having to change th name (if that's what you're doing) after you get married. Why not just apply once you're married?

I got mine roughly a month after I married and after filing for AOS (but of course I didn;t have an EAD yet..) They are somewhat dense at the SSN office and you should definitely print off the stuff in case they need to beaten over the head with it.

Here's our experience.

We got married on the 31st of December, 2 days after her POE date.

5 days later we went to the SSA office and they were very nice and

she filled out all the forms, I-94 no problem, they took note of the

marriage certificate and her passport.

3+ weeks go by and not a word from the SSA.

It turns out that we got married too soon, but not to have done so

would have meant we couldn't file joint taxes in 2009.

They threw out her application and didn't even give us the

courtesy of a letter of refusal.

I had to go there myself and get it out of them, because

it was necessary for us to file our 09 taxes without her

actually having an SSN. We filed the taxes like that, with

the expectation that she will be given a temporary tax ID number.

I have to check with the IRS next week about that.

If we had waited to get married and applied for the SSN

around 2 weeks after her POE date, the application would

have been approved. Don't go too soon after she arrives,

because it won't be in the Homeland security database and

the SSA only goes by that when checking eligibility.

Here's the catch-22:

If we had not got married on the last day of 2009, we

would have been able to get her a social security number

but would NOT have been able to file taxes jointly.

Therefore, we have to wait for her EAD or green card

in order to get her a social security number.

well i had no issues..but it was in chicago. i filled out the form checked off alien allowed to work, brought marriage certificate and boom bada bing it was done in 5 mins..not counting the 2 hour wait in line lol. i brought my passport with me as well. forgot my bc and thought that might cause an issue, but she never asked me for it.

getting my bank account drivers licence etc was alot easier with an SSN, without it i would not be allowed to drive or be insured by geico and i could not be put on davids life insurance etc with no SSN so for me and aos it was vital i get one right away
