"As the attempted terrorist attack on Times Square showed us again, our enemies today are even more willing than the Nazis or fascists were to kill innocent civilian Americans [in WWII]," Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told reporters

Wow Joe..... more willing than the Nazis? Talk about over exaggerating a situation.

This bill is a bad idea though. Especially when you have people out there (on both sides including those in the house/senate) who call people terrorists who simply protest against government actions in some areas....

There'd be a line crossed somewhere that would lead to turmoil.

Do we suspend due process.

No longer innocent until proven quilty.

And how would his stop the times square bombing attempt.

Miranda rights, he was, and is, after all an American Citizen, right wrong or indifferent.

McVay was an American Citizen when he died.

Charley Manson is still an American Citizen.

Is this not the type of government control conservatives are against, now they rally around it?

Panic is beginnng to set in.

Even I think this is ridiculous.

What it would say then is don't bother becoming a citizen as you are never truly an American.

Though, had your mother run across the border along sections of the are not fenced and given birth to you in the US, then you can run for president.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Why do we need a new law? we already have provisions for Treason.

IMO they are just connecting terrorism to Treason. The way treason is defined currently it appears at least to me that the country must be at war officially. In the 21st century no one is ever "legally" at war with anyone anymore. Likewise terrorism isn't connected to a defined nation or "enemy". Hence the change.

You are right. Treason is generally defined as a crime of war. However the War on Terror has been called a "War" on many occasions.

Do people on wall street, CEOs or executives that have screwed over thousands of Americans for their own gain also qualify for this?

For example, companies being negligent and dumping chemicals into water streams causing cancer. Do all of these guys qualify? Some of these CEO are responsible for 1,000 9/11 equivalent deaths. The only difference is that were caused slowly rather than in one devastating blow. That is who should be have their citizenship stripped from them.

That's a good point, what does removing citizenship really accomplish?

A fast track to Guantanamo (or the new equivalent).

It's a silly idea of course - I agree with that article that Paul posted the other day, immediately after a disaster, or near disaster people react by trying to close the barn door - even though the horses have bolted already. Partly because of course we the people demand 'action' whether or not that action has any hope of doing anything to help or not.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There is only one effective way to mitigate such crimes but you will cry murder if they did so. I am sure you can guess what this is. Starts with P.
