Hello everyone,

I went to get a driver's permit today. After giving them all the required documents like the I-94, passport, 2 proof of address, SSN (with my husband last name used), they let me take the exam and I passed. But when they were supposed to give me an ID, they said they can't and that I'd have to wait for my permanent residence card!? Has anyone had the same experience and have something to share?

Maybe I don't have THE answer you're looking for, but a couple of things in my experience might shed light on your question. I was recently approved for AOS. My IO said I could go ahead and get an SSN (or wait till my conditional GC arrives). He knew that I had an EA card, which he let me kept till the GC arrives and asked me to return by mail.

Now, I have had an SSN since my college years a long time ago. But I didn't know if I would be given a new SSN. I went to the local SS Administration office and learned that mine had been deactivated since I left the country. (I went back to Canada a few years after graduation.) The clerk specifically said, upon activating my SSN, that I cannot use my SSN to obtain Drivers Licence or open bank accounts. It was only for Employment, which I honestly think doesn't make sense. You get paid for but cannot deposit? :P

I already have a joint account with my wife, but that's another long story about an online banking issue. Anyway, to make this long story short, the clerk said I must wait till my GC arrives and come back to upgrade SSN so that I can do all of that mentioned above, including online banking.

So, we're still paying extra for an extra driver for our car because I am Canadian. :P Sucks. But not for long.

Cheers.

Yes! I am approved!!! :)

It took only two (2) months to be approved. Hooray!

It depends on your state but the standard is that they will only give you a permit dated until your I-94 expires, and then you need to wait until you have your GC (in some cases just the approval letter) to get it renewed for the "proper" length of time.

Some states are different but that's what "usually" happens. They really should have told you that before you took the test.

Yeah you are right, that's what I'm thinking too.. They shouldn't have given me an exam in the first place if i don't qualify and my I-94 doesn't expire until June 21, 2010. :innocent:
