Groundhogs

Besides killing or trapping a groundhog does anyone know of any products/recipes or methods to deter groundhogs from the garden? This animal lives under our poolhouse.

I don't know what either of those are but the latter sounds great!

Ok Ok.. enough with the motor oil and gasoline down the holes geez.. why dont yall go work for exxon or something #######..

At home depot they sell a little stick, about the size of a small candle. You light it and throw it in the hole and then stuff a rag in to plug it up. Voila done.

I personally like the plastic explosive method of Bill Murray in Caddyshack. But only in theory as I've never seen it done live.

If you have a motorhome or trailer (one with shower, NOT basic one), then a version of roi-aggie's method will work--empty its septic tank down into groundhog/gopher hole!

Where do you live? Are you near Michigan?? I have a20lb. Black cat named Ozzy because he is the devil who can and does kill anything. We haven't hadn't a mole, chipmunk, opossum or anything else in our yard for a year now. They do not survive.

And just so everyone knows, YES we've neutered him, declawed him in the front AND he has a big ol bell on him AND i feed him tons of yummies but he still kills. He is a murderer. We even got him a Sharon to call him down. Nope, nothing doing.

So, if you would like to borrow the Prince of Darkness please let me know. But if you're petting him and he starts to purr RUN away, that's when he strikes.

Funny you should say that, Gupt.

My hubby gets his .22 at the ready...pours a bit of gasoline down the gopher hole...throws a match down (carefully and he THROWS it, making sure he isn't OVER the hole....lol) and waits till the "BOOM!" is over and the flames die down and the smoke clears a bit...cuz it's then that the gopher generally pops it's head out. And then the rest, as well as the gopher...is history.

I do NOT recommend this method, just relaying what the hubster does. I know it may sound cruel but hell, you don't want holes everywhere....and the holes can be dangerous too, broken legs and ankles. You don't want all your hard work you put into having a garden (veggies and/or flowers) all to be for naught, either. Sometimes ya just gotta do whatcha gotta do.

a .22 pellet gun would be less dangerous to neighbors

That's one of the better options, maybe I can buy my brother in law a six pack of Billy beer and he can nail it with his powerful air rifle. He does have a really nice one, we did some target practice before next to the woods. Seriously, that thing is just as powerful as a .22, I think that is what you are talking about. Those groundhogs are wily though, especially the spoiled suburban ones. It would be a waiting game, I suppose.

Well the lady at the shelter said that 3 other people had adopted him then brought him back when they realized he was crazy so then I REALLY had to adopt him. He seems to have some residual emotional scarring from that - abandonment issues I suppose. So she suggested another kitten, a best friend, might calm him down - so I picked up a little Sharon a few months later. Uh, no...he simply taught her how to hunt, even though she's rubbish at it. She falls asleep watching the wood pile waiting for any creatures to emerge...i've seen her passed out on top of it while Ozzy is chasing something around it....

OK so this may seem a bit cruel...but just by reading the comments...I think it is actually ok lol..Now my mother use to really value her flowers and veggie gardens..took pride. Living in the country as you can imagine, we had loads of critters and this trick worked for them all. You take little sponges, (bite size for critters) and soak them in gravy. The critters eat them up then...when they digest..the sponges start to expand. And welllllllll...I am sure you can guess what happens. If you don't mind burying the lil critters then that should do ya!!!

Oh and yeah...alka seltzer works too. Thought it only worked on birds..but no..it works on the land critters as well. Don't ask...lol something my brother use to do when we were kids...

We just keep filling the holes and they soon give up after having to dig them all again. The cruelty free way that works for us!
