I'm a Realtor too (not in Texas) and a majority of relocation packages I've seen are really nothing special - mostly a collection of other resources for the client to investigate. We can't, for example, tell you which are 'good' or 'bad' neighborhoods but we can give you resources to look up crime rates by area.

As a private individual - I can tell you that Austin is a good place to live, work and raise a family. There are good schools here (not all, of course) - lots of employers in Technology and other specialty areas. Things that buffer us from most major economic fluctuations (not immune of course).

Housing is good here - lots of inventory currently so bargains abound - but there was never a real 'bubble' to burst here. Renters enjoy a fairly good selection of single-family, duplex and apartment options too.

Its a fun town - lots to do - very green-oriented. Its the Capitol so there is that (for what that's worth). The weather is OK - usually - very hot in summer so be prepared for that.

My 2-cents

Oh, thanks for making that point....I should have been more clear....I don't tell people what are 'good/bad' (that's illegal) areas. I just meant my packets include the information for the customer to follow through with researching more for him/herself - as you said. But it's very detailed packet. Basically, anything I would personally look for if moving into a new and unknown area.

I agree - they can be a really valuable one-stop-shopping for a lot of information about an area/city. There are likely things in them that you'd never even think to ask about and I don't think they're 'fluff' pieces.

A good Realtor will gladly send one out to you - no obligation. Some even have them on their web sites.

I have lived in So. Cal. most of my life and my husband and I live here now. However, we are relocating to the Seguin area, between San Antonio and Austin. We prefer the more rural life and are in the process of buying 7 acres for my horses and assundry other animals. :) We traveled all over the New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Seguin and Gruene areas.

Op, it really depends on what you want...are you looking for city life? Or you like me, more suited to wide open spaces. Texas has all those areas. Don't mind snow? Like the coast? Love the country? There are many choices.

The only reason we are leaving California though is because we want to start our tattoo/piercing shop there. It is very cost prohibitive and licence requirement prohibitive to start it here in Cali. Life is also a bit less expensive in Tx, and my ranch is waiting for me there.

I am very sad to leave California and my kids (adults) live here too. I will miss them all dearly. But we looked all over the west coast and central US states, and finally, after almost 1.5 yrs of searching and internet researching...we decided Tx was the place for us.

Seguin is very nice and rural but the big city and the happenings are not too far to drive. Excellent choice you made. Welcome to Texas.
