Immigrant 'father, mother and son' tied themselves together and jumped to their deaths from tower block 'rather than be deported'

An immigrant family of three facing deportation died after jumping from the 15th floor of a high-rise flat.

The horrific incident happened at a notorious tower block complex in a run-down district of Glasgow.

The bodies of the victims - understood to be a man, his wife and their son - were found lying at the foot of the block.

They tied themselves together before making the 150ft suicide leap from the YMCA-managed property.

Although the victims' identities have not been released, locals said they may have been Kosovans or Russians who faced being deported.

Detectives said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The bodies were discovered at the Red Road flats at Petershill Drive, Springburn, at about 8.30am yesterday.

Strathclyde Police blocked off the street and officers stood guard. The area around the flat was cordoned off and two white tents were erected by forensic officers.

Scotland-based charity Positive Action in Housing said the three were believed to be a mother, father and son originally from the former Soviet Union.

Robina Qureshi, director of the charity, said: 'We know that they were asylum seekers. We know that their asylum application had been refused and were facing imminent destitution under the asylum rules. The son was in his 20s and the mother was in her 40s.

'We believe that there should be a public inquiry into these deaths, and particularly to do with the impact that the UK Borders Agency has on the lives of asylum seekers who have lived here for years but live in the fear of removal.

'We want to know what role the UK Borders Agency (UKBA) played. We ask that the UKBA issue an immediate statement about the suicides.'

A spokeswoman for the UK Border Agency said: 'It is an ongoing police investigation and we won't be making any comment at the moment.'

Elizabeth Neilson, 42, who lives in the opposite block, said: 'I opened my blinds and saw them lying there this morning at about 8.30am.

'I saw two concierge staff standing there and three bodies lying on the ground. It is horrible.

'I phoned the concierge and he said he couldn't say much but that three people had thrown themselves off the veranda.'

:( How sad.

The oddest thing I have read is that they were not directly trying to immigrate from Russia to the UK, but were trying to immigrate to the UK from Canada and that Canada had granted them leave to stay in Canada, but not citizenship. Needless to say, to believe that suicide is your best option? Very difficult to get to grips with.

Nothing more coward than taking one's own life. For that reason the German word for suicide is self-MURDER.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

suicide is from the Latin... to kill oneself

the prefix sui- is from the Latin for oneself.

present active caedō, present infinitive caedere, perfect active cecīdī, supine caesus.

1. To cut, to hew, to fell.

2. To strike, to beat.

3. To kill.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Callous comments are inappropriate. It is not amusing nor clever to ridicule tragedy nor to suggest that this same tragedy is an appropriate course of action for anyone else to take, no matter how 'popular' it is to denigrate certain individuals.

150ft fall from a tower block onto concrete - doesn't bear thinking about. Must have been a horrible mess.

Always found people's attitudes interesting - whenever someone would kill themselves by jumping in front of a subway train, that people are always more concerned about being inconvenienced by it than they are by the fact that someone has just died in a horrible manner.

THe usual groups will milk this odd situation for all it's worth.

I noted they even pulled out the "Former Soviet Union" wordage to darken the tone of their circumstances that awaited them back home.

<<<Scotland-based charity Positive Action in Housing said the three were believed to be a mother, father and son originally from the former Soviet Union.>>>

I guess it's possible they left Russian near 20 years ago, when it was in fact the USSR.
