The knock on the door in the middle of the night

Well, hubby and I had a lovely Valentine's Day yesterday. I woke up to a trail of petals leading me from the bedroom to a bottle of champagne in the fridge and to a beautiful bouquet in the living room. It was a gorgeous warm day for here so we went for a walk in the park and later had dinner at a nice restaurant. We came home tired and happy. Soon in bed and asleep awhile later.

Suddenly wake up to very loud insistant banging on the front door. And someone is walking around the house shining a flash light through every window. I'm shaking like a leaf and hubby pulls me close and tells me to keep quiet. This goes on for about 15-20 minutes, then stops. At one point I hear what sounds like someone talking on a cell phone "I'm at the house....all the lights are out." Well, I'm absolutely terrified as to what all this means. We've had problems with the people across the street from us (they've been stealing vegetables from our garden, playing loud music way into the night) generally making life a misery. Some very odd things have been going on over there, having people over all hours of the night, all the lights on all the time, whole group of them sitting by the door looking at our house. I dont know if this is an attempt on their part to intimdate us, or what. I said, what if for some reason it was the police? Craig said if it had been the police or some other authorities, they would have identified themselves.

I haven't been able to sleep and scared to open the curtains or go outside to collect the mail. Afraid that the same will happen tonight.

Well, I dont know what good this will do, but thought I would share.

Kate

Kate,

I would call the police if this happens again. You can have them come to the residence and investigate whom is outdoors. Take precautions and stay safe.

 That sounds very frightening indeed. Definitely call the police if it happens again. Just keep your eyes open and be aware of anything that seems amiss.

eek...scary!

I cant imagine it would be a burglar, they wouldnt bang on a door or walk around with a flashlight i doubt.

Police maybe...is it possible they did try to identify themselves and you didnt hear them? You could call your local department and see if they sent anyone round there.

got a gun?? Just to be safe, not trying to scare you!

Craig needs to get himself a bat. Perhaps a big ol' sword or some sort. If I see someone with a sword, it commands respect. I would definitely not put up with that kind of ####### at home. Get a big bear trap, that'll stop them nice and quick.

I love my job.

yup. A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. LOL - I'm sorry, but this reminds me of the famous scene from one of the Indiana Jones movies

(Raiders of the Lost Ark, I think) where Indy comes across a skilled swordfighter, but instead of

engaging him in a swordfight, takes out his gun and shoots him dead.

I'm sure it was terrifying, and I feel for you.

But thinking about it logically in the light of day, far from the circumstances, it doesn't seem like someone was seriously trying to harm you. They made lots of noise, giving up any element of surprise they might have had, and they didn't try to break a window and enter by force. That doesn't sound like the behavior of very serious evildoers.

I have had police come to my door to ask questions relating to an investigation, and they don't always identify themselves until you open the door. But I would expect them either to give up in less than 15 minutes if it wasn't urgent, or else identify themselves if it was urgent.

In any case, I'd certainly call the police immediately if it happens again. In fact, if I were you, I would call the police non-emergency number (don't call 911 - look in the phone book for a non-emergency number!) and report the incident today anyway. Maybe it was them, and if so, they'll be able to explain what they were doing. If it wasn't them, the report may help them keep an extra eye on things going on in your neighborhood for the next few days.
