Filling out DS 230.Do not know mother's date of birth

My spouse is presently filling out DS 230.Unfortunately he does not know his mother's date of birth and weather if she is dead or alive..[sad..his mother left him with his dad at age 4]. Should spouse put NA or Do Not KNOW?

In this situation 'unknown' would work since this question obviously applies but the information is unknown

Isn't mother's date of birth listed on his birth certificate?

In my particular situation both of my parents' information was unknown and that is how I filled out the DS 230. I had no issues at all; it never came up for me at any point in the process. Good luck.
