I did a great deal of research on installing solar and wind alternatives here and the local government will not allow wind of any kind. The solar IMO has too long of a BEP for the amount invested based on current technology/pricing. As efficiency increases and costs are reduced it will become a viable option, but with the growing costs of rare earth and China's vow to keep the rare earth resources they have for their own use, greatly limiting the supply.. green technology may become more expensive in the short term until more $ is invested in rare earth exploration.

The punchline depended upon the ASSumption that it would be impossible to make a solar powered flashlight that would work in the dark. Thanks for playing.

maybe you missed the part about it only working during the day. :innocent:

Wow, a quick google search and now I know what that is, had no idea! I don't think we'll build from scratch right now, no.. but the house we will have we want to make as affordable as possible and as I'm all for sustainable living any ideas on how to live cut the bills the house will generate will be welcomed ;)

This hybrid solar panels will survive very harsh environmental conditions. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Let us know when you get yours installed.

Nick was talking about his invention of a solar powered flashlight that wouldn't work in the dark. If there is some relevance in your post to it, please let me know.

That part was all in fun, but storage of solar energy is still a major and a very expensive problem to solve with even talk about using it to heat water cut deep into the side of a mountain.

Did get one of those hand crank LED flashlights, handy when you need it. The Weather Channel brand of all kinds, has a little permanent magnet motor in, greatly stepped up with a series of gears, don't crank it too hard, that charges a 70mah NiCad, MH battery, with some solid state acting as a voltage regulator.

Comes in handy when all of your other flashlights have dead batteries in them, and all of mine do have dead batteries. Never think about that until you need them.

In the 19th century when just about all the whales were killed for their oil, natural gas was used for lighting, anybody think about building a natural gas operated computer? With new EPA regulations, practically all new power plants are using natural gas, really a waste in terms of efficiency.
