Hey guys... we got married in bruges (belgium), havent reported anything in the US so far, but we're doing some of the first paperwork as we speak. Does Evalyn first have to file papers confirming our marriage in her town cityhall in tennessee or does all that happen with filing at USCIS? or maybe we have to get married here?

We're about to file form I-130 and G-325, do we already have to prove something as far as an ongoing marriage?

I believe you are all set to go but she should call the courthouse to see if it is different in Tennessee than where I am in Arizona. I was married in Morocco and when I called the courthouse they said they did not need anything from me and that my marriage is already recognized. You just need ot have a copy of your marriage license/contract. Again, it may vary state to state so I would call the court on Tuesday to make sure.

Married is married. The only marriage certificate or registration you'll need is the one you already have. Name changes are a separate matter. Is that what you're asking about?

Thanks for the info, what about the namechange though, how does my wife, who resides in Tennessee go about that? when does she change her name since we're starting the papers with her maiden name, do we or can we wait till all immigration papers are done?

If your wife's name has been legally changed to your last name, then she would put that name on the paperwork. The name change for her requires her to bring the marriage license to the Social Security office and the Department of Motor Vehicles to her new DL.

If she is the USC I am not sure that it matters for her to change her name before you do the paperwork or not. That would be between the two of you. I am assuming you are the beneficiary?

How to change a name in Tennessee after marriage is not an immigration question but the timing of doing so is up to her. She may also choose not to change her name.
