With computers, we use a BILBO/BIST device to generate pseudo-random numbers. It's not quite random. But, depending on different ways we tap the output of a Q-flip flop and OR it into a MUX, we can generate a syndrome. The syndrome is random, but, unique in that it can be obtainable is the output of the same flip flops are OR'ed together.

Computers cannot actually generate random numbers. But, random process are used in noise analysis with communications or signal processing. It's a random variable that varies with time. When you send an FM/AM/QAM/PWM signal you will obviously get a problem with noise. What electrical engineers do is they build different demodulation schemes to compensate for the noise within the hardware. To do that, we need to understand noise. When an electromagnetic wave propagates through the air, it's okay, nothing is loss. But, at the receiver end is the problem. Noise are rampant within the electrical circuits. It can be caused by noisy resistors.

I'm turning this thread into a science classroom.

Knew the answer before I asked... lol... lets not get started on attenuation...

What's this fuss about true randomness?

Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are a generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you're used to dice rolls and lottery drawings.

RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding drawings, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive games and gambling sites, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has existed since 1998 and was built and is being operated by Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.

This is based on the assumption that atmospheric noise is random... maybe it is maybe it is not

Detecting a bit of boasting in the replies in an attempt to show off knowledge when the OP is asking a very basic algebraic question.

What drive do you have to get into matrices, differential equations, trigonometric identities, etc., etc. etc., when that has nothing to do with the simple question the OP has asked. And apparently difficult for her. We seem to forget these concepts were likewise difficult for us as well when exposed to them as children.

In going over in this subject with my kids, over and over again, the key problems I noted is not knowing the precise order of operations, and forgetting the rules of fractions they had back in the fifth grade. Getting that down pat made algebra much easier for them to understand.

So are we going to help the OP or brag about our accomplishments? I see no need to brag and a perhaps a visit with your therapist on a compulsive disorder is well overdue.

Everyone who just bragged! SHADDAP!

Mathematics and Physics has been my two biggest and strongest subjects. Always wanted to learn the significance of higher dimensional world. And, with Stephen Hawkings as an inspirator I'd like to one day space travel by manipulating space surrounding us. The thing with electromagnetic fields is that we can't see them. We can build detectors to determine the strength of fields, but, we can't see them. However, the field is a physical thing that affects the forces of electromagnetic interactions. Weird. That is where our answers lie in manipulating space. That will be the answer to space manipulation for space travel to distant galaxies (looking for Earth like planets).

Well, it would have to deal with the gravitational field since the gravitational affects time, not the EM fields.

Yep - I'm posting a math question on the off topic board. I have no shame. :D Please help if you can!!

Question #2. The problem has to do with dividing rational expressions.

I think my answer is going in the right direction but I don't think it is simplified enough. The answer seems too long.

Thanks so much!!
