Majority Would Vote Against Obama

By Reid Wilson

A year into his tenure, a majority of Americans would already vote against Pres. Obama if the '12 elections were held today, according to a new survey. The Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor poll shows 50% say they would probably or definitely vote for someone else. Fully 37% say they would definitely cast a ballot against Obama. Meanwhile, just 39% would vote to re-elect the pres. to a 2nd term, and only 23% say they definitely would do so.

Obama's first year in office has been marked by an unemployment rate that surged to 10%, an increased commitment of troops to Afghanistan and a health care battle that has taken a serious political toll on the WH.

Obama's approval rating is down to 47%, the poll showed, a 14-point drop since the April survey. 45% disapprove, up 17 points from April. Only 41% say they trust Obama more than Congressional GOPers, while 33% pick the GOP over the WH. That 8-point gap is down from a 21-point edge Obama sported as recently as Sept.

Just 34% say the country is moving in the right direction, down 13 points since April, and 55% say it is off on the wrong track, up 13 points over the same period.

But as GOPers focus on taxes and spending, that message seems to be causing Obama the most harm. Among those who believe Obama's policies have moved the country in the wrong direction, 45% cite spending and government regulation as a top cause for their opposition.

Meanwhile, those who think Obama's policies are moving the country down the right track largely cite long-term benefits of his initiatives.

In the meantime, health care legislation is by no means popular, but a majority of Americans don't oppose the legislation yet. 44% said they support the legislation under consideration, down 5 points from the last poll in Sept., while 46% oppose it.

The poll, conducted by Financial Dynamics, surveyed 1,200 adults between Jan. 3-7 for a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.

I find it funny that Right Wingers have concerned themselves with popularity polls of Obama from day one that he was sworn into office, particularly after a blowing defeat last November. If the election was held today, Obama v. McCain, he'd still win the election. Context is everything. Wait another year and let's see polls showing which Republican candidates would fair against Obama...that at least is a little more telling. So far, the Republican leadership is this huge vacuum and those hoping Romney will be the one are delusional.

That's nothing!!! The majority of Americans voted against George W Bush BEFORE he became president.

This survey won't mean anything unless the GOP can come up with something better than McCain/Palin next time.

Wrong. A miniscule plurality voted for Gore. THose that voted Nader don't count. If you don't like the electoral college, get it changed.

In your mind, any republican being "the one" is delusional thinking. The only people worthy are communists.

The opposition party usually doesn't have a clear leader when they hold no control in any branch of the government. No one was whining about the Dems not having leadership (when they didn't) when the repubs were in control. John Kerry was your best "leader" at the time...

Bush's approval ratings were over 80% shortly after 9/11 and they hovered around 30% during the last two years he was in office. Conversely Reagan's numbers were below 50% after his first year & he is now regarded as one of the best Presidents we've had (while Bush is considered one of the worst).

My point? Approval ratings can change drastically over the course of a President's tenure & what really matters are the approval ratings near election time & of course the opinions of a President after they leave office. Obama's current approval ratings are merely a snapshot & say very little about his Presidency (only history will tell).

No offense, but I don't give a rat's #### about the electoral college or any other part of the asinine jackass charade that passes for the American political system. They can filibuster until they rot in their graves. Democrats and Republicans deserve each other and there's plenty of room for them all in hell.

I'm merely stating the facts. Absolute percentage of voters is not what matters, and polls can all change quickly if the next Republican candidate is as much of a halfwit as the last one.

I don't know what you mean by Republicanism, but there's a history here where Guano or whatever his name is always opposes anyone who isn't a democrat (AKA Commie light)

No, not really. Communism is a genuine political ideology, all be it one that no Democrat espouses. Communism gives Americans the chills whereas '**' is a meaningless epithet with no negative associations beyond the obvious.

Refusing to use the spellchick!
