I'm not questioning the validity of the degrees, though I am sure that could be a problem once in awhile. The US has hired a lot of foreign engineers for their skill. Like in India, studying hard to get high marks is a huge pressure and to get a good career. Not sure if it's the same in the countries studied or not. My point is more that it is actually a good opportunity to be an engineer if you are from a country lacking in other opportunities because it is sought after worldwide.

I think she IS saying that because it does happen in many places that it casts doubt on the rest that have legitimate degrees.

what places? i think it's incredible people think that a majority are fraudulent. furthermore - what places churn out engineers from 2 year technical training?

I didn't say majority, and neither did nina. The phrase was "a lot", which I suppose I interpreted less harshly than you did. It happens everywhere, even here, just look at those online universities. They get some sort of accreditation and because of it, many employers can't discount their degrees.

How would someone in engineering use a false degree when it takes the learned skills to do the job? Just wondering what would be the point of that, for getting an actual engineering job. Thinking out loud.

I come from a 3rd world country and I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. So I am not implying anything about fraudulent degrees. I have met way too many "engineers" who have no clue about anything but they are "Engineers" because their college gave them a degree... I am suspicious of this article because I wonder what criteria did they use to justify a person as an engineer... i.e, did they go to and engineering school for a couple of years and drop out, or did attend a fancy University and get a degree, did they just go to a techncial school, or are they a locomotive engineer (train operator)..

"a lot" coupled with "churning out". I just don't know where this doubt comes from, but it really matters not, just seemed like a flip comment to me.

You'd be suprised!!! I remember listening on NPR years ago about a college in India that did not have computers but were awarding students with degrees in Computer Science.. They taught their students different programming languages using a textbook, pen & paper..

Legitmate degree - maybe

Effective Programers - Questionable

This is quite amusing to say the least.

Nobody is asking the question why the faculties in big name Universities that has a College of Engineering has so many Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Middle-Eastern members.

I can nearly garuntee in UC-Berkeley's College of Engineering has an Asian everywhere you walk within their corridors. Heck, the IEEE Symposiums, Paper Conferences has nearly 95% Asians. I find it very amusing.

Don't get started with MIT or RIT.

It's just so weird that most Asians pursue Engineering. Heck, now they're moving to the Medical fields as well.

One other thing, many of the faculties in those BIG NAME schools received their undergrad degree in either India, or China. They then get a student visa here to get their PH.D here in the USA. Taking control of the population. They outsmarted the Americans in Math, and Science.

Nowdays if you're working for Bell Labs, you'll encounter a majority of Asians. Or, if you're working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, more Asians.

I looked at the roster of many successful MS candidates who received their degree in Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, all Asians except for one.

Quite amazing.
