Thankfully the suburbs of chicago are pretty diverse. You can find VERY cheap and VERY expensive in the same neighborhood. Taxes range from about 2k to 13k in a 20 mile radius though so we are definitly looking somewhere where taxes are nice and cheap, and where schools are good.

I agree that owning is alot more headache and risky, but we are not taking anything that we cannot handle. My logic is it needs to be afforded on one income, in case either of us lost our job. A house for about 150k is what were leaning towards.

My aunt turned 49 this year. She has never owned a home nor has ever wanted to. *shrug*

I want to own a home, though, simply because I want something that is 'mine' and can do whatever I want to do with it.

Because we bought near the end of the boom and later found out we had stinking sinkhole issues(been 2yrs + now of dealing with it including grout pumped under the house by insurance, and a lot of other annoying things) our house is worth ####### compared to what we owe. So our house feels like a chain around my ankle. We are stuck in it. I envy renters at this time. The idea that one can just simply move if they want to, even if they have to finish a year lease, sounds wonderful to me right now. We can afford our mortgage but we just don't want to live here anymore. But we have no choice right now. But that wasn't a 2o09 screw up, that was a 2006 screw up. :P We would buy again, but this time would take longer probably and would be very very cautious about what we buy. We like our house, we don't like the ####### value it has now.

Yeah, that's the look. <_<

I hear ya. The argument renters usually get from owners is "but don't you want to give your chil'run a stable home life?" or some variation thereof.

I think the argument is a remnant from the days when renters lived in tenement buildings and were subject to the whims of slumlords.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
