I am wrestling with the nurse at the Civil Surgeon in Amarillo, Texas (Dr. Phillips) about whether they can sign the I693 without performing an entire medical examination. I have given them a copy of the official instructions which say my fiancee does not have to have another physical examination, but they argue that the instructions require the Civil Surgeon to certify that he performed it. How to you convince the Civil Surgeon that he doesn't have to perform the medical examination?

You can't. It has NOTHING to do with the law. They KNOW the law, they WANT to charge you for another medical exam and make money doing so. The CS's unfortunatley are not regulated by USCIS and can charge or require whatever they want in order to provide their signature. Find another one.

I had the same problem in Florida. I phoned all the civil sugeons in my area and spoke to the nurses (who know nothing about I693). They all told me that all medical exam have to be performed and will charge me hefty price. I finally found a civil surgeon who did immigration medical exams only and I spoke to her directly before making the appointment. She only did a blood test to check my immunity and completed the vaccination part of I693. But to see her was also pricey (but lesser to the other civil surgeons I phoned).

My suggestion is to phone and ask around.

Welcome to America.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

We only have one civil surgeon within 120 miles. My wife (I meant wife, not fiancee in my original post--only married 5 weeks) is freaking out because of all the women she knows in this area who came to the U.S. on K1, she is the only one who even had to file the I-693, and now she is being told by the idiot nurse that she also has to have a medical exam, even though I showed the nurse the instructions which say she doesn't.

It is my intent when this is all over to report this civil surgeon to the American Medical Association for performing uneccessary medical procedures on patients--seems like they would frown on that sort of thing. I will also be writing my congressman about the need for immigration reform in the Civil Surgeon area. If enough people start making noise about this, maybe we can do something about these theives.

Then you're screwed, and they know this. If they are the only CS within that much distance, they know you will pay whatever they ask.

Don't waste your time.
