It's ok - I guess Maine doesn't figure on the radar either Karen.

Portland's a nice little city, though....

:star:

So I've heard :) I checked into the possibility of living in Maine a few months ago. It would certainly put us closer to Joel's family, by ferry that is. :)

are these the best places to live or the places where you can make the most money?

The "Best Places to Live" ranking (distinct from the "10 best big cities" ranking) excludes places with a population of less than 50,000 and more than 300,000. It also excludes retirement havens. It also excludes places with low education scores, high crime rates and declines in employment and other undesirable factors. After that, it looks at things like home prices, quality of public schools, crime rates, proximity to universities and museums, etc.

Clearly, there are people who prefer rural living and for them this survey serves no purpose.

Quality of Life:

Violent crime risk index is a comparative measure of the risk of a violent crime occurring. Violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and assault. (100 = the national average. 200 = twice the national average.) Note that a risk of 100 reflects a safe area.

 so even if such is happening to you, you're safe ;)

100 means average. The assumption they're making is that average is 'safe'.

Thankfully, where I live we're in the single digits.

quality of public schools,

There are quality public schools??

:P

Yessssssssssssssss....and I happen to teach in one that has earned the Georgia Public School of Excellence award several times running....and before you even say it....NO, I am not being biased. I've taught in other systems that would make me homeschool before letting our daughter be enrolled in their system.

Maybe there aren't quality public schools where YOU are though...don't knock all public schools. :)
