Hello,

I have applied for SSN after getting married on K1 visa. After 3 weeks of waiting I noticed that there was a mistake on the address and we went to the SS office for help. We were informed that it will take some more time because they had to withdraw the card and that they are reviewing my file. May I apply for AOS without the SSN? My I94 expires on Dec 24th.

The K1 precess took us 9 long months.

AOS

09/25/09 - POE: JFK

10/05/09 - married on K1 visa

11/23/09 - filed for AOS, EAD, AP

12/21/09 - Biometrics

02/01/10 - received work permit and adv parole

02/11/10 - Card production ordered!

02/23/10 - Green card received

here is how it works...

1. Get off the plane

2. Go to SS and apply for the card

3. Call SS office 24 hours later and get your number

4. Unpack

5. get married

My wife applied for her SSn 16 hours after arriving, hand her SS number 24 hours later, card in hand in 6 days. You must do this within 14 days of when your I-94 expires. Go today.

There is no need to wait 10 days, the SAVE system updates overnight. DO NOT leave the SS office until your application is accepted. ASK them the number to call to get your SS number the next morning. SS numbers are generated overnight but you may wait a week for the card. There is no need to wait any further. Apply for the card in the name as in the passport....no other! Change the name if you must after you have a green card.

SS if full of bottom feeding, paid-by-the-pound clerks that will make new law before asking a supervisor a question.

A K-1 should be accepted without question, the application process should go smoothly, the person should be able to tell you the number to call for SS number the next morning...if NOT, then get a supervisor and do not leave until you have this information. Any clerk which tells you anything else is wrong and has no cluer what they are talking about.

Yes, you can apply for AOS without it. Fortunately the USCIS knows that applicants allow mouth-breathing morons at SS to stamp all over their rights and allows them to apply for AOS without the card which is being held up by the idiots at SS.

I suggest you go back to SS and get this straightened out now, even of you have to go out of the state to find someone trained in how to handle a K-1 SSN.

God I hope they never control my healthcare!

wait-what? I thought you needed your marriage certificate...? Or is that if you want your new last name on your SS card?

I came in Oct. 9th, got married Oct. 27th, and am awaiting receipt of my marriage certificate from the county (the judge took it post us getting married)...

I wanna get my Canadian a$$ employed soon--so many rad jobs here!!

You don't need the marriage certificate to get an SSN. You'll need it to get a new card issued in your married name if you got the original in your married name.

NB: Having an SSN does NOT authorize you to work. You need to wait 'til you get an EAD (Employment Authorization Document - file I-765 with your I-485 AOS package).

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

Stephen + Elisha,

you mean that the SSN card received after arrival on K-1 has no Employment authorization? if that is the case, do you have to

re-apply to replace the card, or just to change the employment status?

It should have been issued with the endorsement "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION." You don't have to replace the card, but you need to apply for and receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) prior to working. The Social Security card alone is not enough.

After you receive the green card, you can apply for a new Social Security card without the endorsement.

You can get an SSn immediately...as a K1. You still will no tne able to work.. I said nothing about working, I said you can get an SSN. While you need ans SSN to work, the SSN does not authorize work. The EAD or green card do that...you need both to work.

SSN is not and never will be work authorization.
