Changing name when getting married....or not.

I was just reading in the step-by-step guide for the K1 and noticed one of the steps said "Go back to the SSA office and bring your SSN Card and marriage certificate. Change your name."

I wasn't planning on changing my name to my husbands when we get married.....I want to keep my own. So I was just wondering if this will cause any problems???

You can use any combination of your name and husbands name. Why not have five names?

I have to agree with this. I was planning on NOT changing my name (we had already discussed this). What do you think he did when he filed the I-130?? Overseas marriage certs are not recognised as proof of name change for the Australian Passport Office. I have to legally change my name which costs $135 and takes 6 weeks to be registered. Only then can I apply for a new passport. Not to mention DL, Medicare and Bank accounts ... what's good for one govt department is never good for another. Stick with your own name if that was your intention ...

I kept my own name as well. It has never been a problem and like Gary and Alla said, it has actually prevented a number of problems.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

For K-1 Appliers, passport with your maiden name is not a problem in case of taking a flight. You can buy the plane tickets with your Maiden name. Then when you come back to the US, present your GC with the US marriage certificate and your passport.

I've read that most of the people do it that way and don't have any trouble.

But for the rest of the things, such us Medicare or Bank accounts... I don't know. :(
