Can outstanding student loans keep me from getting Canadian Passport?

Same as title hehe. I was wondering if owing some money for (Canadian) student loans would keep me from getting a passport. I spoke with Passport Canada twice. I was told once that "yes, it will keep you from getting one" and "no, it won't keep you from getting one".

So which is it?

Do you mean unpaid loans? It's quite possible. Loans that are up-to-date shouldn't matter at all.

I've heard some horror stories about people with unpaid loans that just move to the US. I'm not entirely sure what the answer is. You'll probably just have to apply and see what happens.

Well I would think, and this is just a personal opinion, that if your loans are up-to-date then no it doesn't affect it. But if you are in default and they can't find you, so to speak, when you apply for a passport,...its government..who would share your contact info with the Student Loan people, also government. So if your up-to-date then no it won't effect you. Good luck.

Of course you would honey. That's the type of person you are. :) Take pleasure in other people's misfortune and show no compassion whatsoever. At least, I sleep soundly at night knowing that I'm not mean nor cruel to people I don't know and that I offer the benefit of the doubt. (F)

Exactly.

I have student loans but they are all up to date and I haven't had any issues at all. However I have heard of people who haven't paid and basically its like shooting yourself in the foot. Even missing a payment can screw you over. They're government loans. It's pretty serious to just not pay them.

I'm not trying to evade them. I'm trying to get the situation resolved. This is just a nice little case of catch 22.

People have tried to be nice to you, but everytime they tell you something that you may not want to hear you've become defensive and condescending.

Also, you're on a board full of people who are waiting to reunite with their husbands, wives, fiances etc. And you came on spouting off that you're an illegal... you don't seem to care much about the feelings of others, but hey thats the kind of person you are... completely selfish and unaware of the world around you. :)

Well I got inspected, so I know I'm not illegal. I'm out of status. And yes, I know there are people waiting to see their loved one, and believe me, I sympathize. I know what my situation is and believe me, if I could go back and do it right, with the hindsight I have now, I would. But for now, I'm fubar and I'm trying to fix it. But if you prefer to point and laugh, more power to you.

I can see defaulting on your student loans affecting getting a passport if it's a government student loan.

You might start getting calls from collection agencies once you submit your application for passport. Since they will then know where you are.

Did you just decide leave all responsibilities behind? This is a completely serious question... jokes aside. I don't understand how someone can just do that.

What if this marriage doesn't work out? What if you have to go back to Canada for something? How far behind are you on your payments? You do realize that defaulting on your student loans can screw your credit score and everything right?

My mind is seriously boggled as well, seriously. The interest on defaulted loans from the Canadian government is INSANE. If you ever go back to Canada, they will garnish your wages straight from your bank account. This is a very serious matter. I'm seriously very worried for you... You have no current photo ID, no Canadian passport, you've defaulted on your Canadian loans so the Government is looking for you and you are living in a country out of status (aka illegally). What have you been doing for the past 2.5 years?

Looks like you'll be digging yourself out of a hole deeper than you originally thought. Good luck with that.

My brother defaulted on his student loans. He can't buy ANYTHING on credit, nor get a credit card.

This sucks, cause he asks my mom to buy everything for him and he pays her back... He does pay her back on time, it's just a huge burden for my mom to carry on her credit score.
