Hello there. I'm on a student visa right now. Usually schools ask for your TOR and Diploma. They require your TOR to be evaluated. My advice is look for a school that offers Nursing courses and ask them what the requirements are.

Filed N-400 (Arizona Lockbox) - July 10, 2014

NOA received - July 22, 2014

I will speak for my son who was enrolled here in Rhode Island College. Transcript of Records, TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) which they require a passing mark of 80% (I don't know in other states), green card and SS number. He was 2nd year in BSN when he came here here last April and all his grades were evaluated by US equivalent. Sad to say the grades that he took was made as Electives here. The curriculum is very different here than in the Philippines. He is a Freshman here now instead of Junior already in our country. It's ok for me because I want him to know more about the Nursing Program here. He's taking BSN here also.

Thanks for all the replies, was planning to take 2 years nursing program at community college here at Philadelphia.

I'm enrolled in 2 community colleges here. Not nursing. I'm enrolled in entrepreneural and photography courses. On the application form, i just put that i have my masters and my professional certification. I was not asked to submit anything.

I did not even attend the new student orientation. School is pretty cool.

Verify with your community college their requirements.

Check out allnurses.com huge nursing forum, lot of info for students

Check to see what ur school requires. I had to send in my high school transcripts for mine. As well, had to provide proof that i was legally able to attend school in the USA

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks for all the replies, was planning to take 2 years nursing program at community college here at Philadelphia.

Not sure about Philladelphia, but it would be better to check how students are accepted to the nursing program.

Each school has different measures like GPA based, point based, waiting list system, etc.

Even the school website says it takes only two years, it is not in many cases!

States like CA you have to wait for two years to get into the program once you are approved.

First, you need to visit your local college. You will start with enrollment and admissions. Next is that they will have you take a placement test, which includes math, english, reading, etc.

Once you pass the placement test, you will need to talk to an advisor to know where to start with classes. If you have taken college elsewhere, you might want to have your Transcripts evaluated. This takes time so I suggest you do that NOW. Check with your college about accredited evaluation centers.

You will take your transcript evaluation so the college can enter it into your records. Then you will know which courses are gonna be credited. You should declare your major as ADN (Associate's Degree Nursing), to be able to have a degree plan (classes you need to take).

It is NOT easy to get into the nursing program. You do not start right away. You will need to take pre-requisites, depending on what courses have been credited from your transcripts.

I have a Bachelors degree from the Philippines, but only a few courses were credited, like Math, English, etc... At first, I was going to do ADN, but I have decided to work on a BSN. It takes as long as ADN; and so I don't have to go back to school in the future for a Bachelors in Nursing.

Right now I am taking Anatomy and Physiology 1, Speech, and Psychology (Lifespan & Devt). A&P 1 is taking up so much of my time. It is a hard class. It might take about 4 years to finish just an ADN here, depending on how many classes you take each semester and with ALL the pre-requisites. In the coming semesters, in 2010, I will still be working on my pre-requisites. Yes, ADN programs only says it takes 2 years or 72 credit hours, but that does not include the pre-requisites yet.

Good luck! :)

EACH school program is different so one has to check with each and every program! I graduated with my ADN back in May. Most ADN programs take 4 semesters, sometimes one can go thru the summer and finish earlier than 2 yrs. Yes there are usually perquisites to do before the program that dont count towards those two years (or 4 semesters)

One big advantage of the ADN can be the cost. I paid a ttl of around $7000 for the whole program. Most hospitals give you educational $$ each yr towards education, which can be used for ur BSN, Masters, etc etc.

As others have stated it can be difficult to get into programs as the mast majority are competitive, they go by ur GPA and nursing entrance exams. There are private ones that have ower entrance standards, but their $$$$$$$ is usually very high. But ya have to check what each school requirement are as they vary. Some ADN schools like mine, have deals worked out with "BSN" schools where as long as you have a certain GPA, you can continue on with ur education at that school, sort of jump the line. Its a hard working career, never been busier in my life, 12 hr shifts go by very quickly.

My wife was very interested in this field, but the more we looked into it the more difficult it seemed.

Well not only difficult which she could handle but it seems entirely possible one could invest time and effort only to find she is not get in a program.

If there is a shortage of Nurses, this is the very reason, only a few applicants can even find a seat in the program.

I know someone who is graduating in DEC and she is sweating finding a hospital that will take her for her first years, placement. ( a very good student).

She may have to move to another city to get hired, despite the fact that we have many large hospitals right here.

And to top it off, from what I hear, at this very moment, our Government is working on special visas or program to bring in more foreign nurses.

As for now my wife is working diligently on her English and doing pretty good.

She is thinking about maybe checking out something in the dental field... anyone know anything about field?

With regards to jobs, it matters where u live and what experience you have. As a new RN in the DC area, many that graduated back in May (Diploma, ADN or BSN) still do not have jobs! Unlike in previous yrs where it was very easy to get a job.

If you get an Associates Degree in USA, you can sit for NCLEX to be a RN.

If you are graduate in PI with a nursing degree is must be Bachleors degree in order to sit for NCLEX to be RN.

In USA very competitive to get into a Community College / Univeristy for nursing, plus you must have a high GPA on your core classes. Long waiting list, and many applicants.

You can go to a ATI for nursing, which they will accept about anyone, as long as you have the cash. I think $40,000 for the 2 years nursing program.

Right now Visas for Nurses are not happening.

They have been under Retrogression for a few years, and likely to extend a few more years.

Retrogression, means the USCIS is not issuing any Visa to Forgein Nurses looking for Work Visas into USA.
