Sorry if this topic has been covered - I tried to search the forum topics and came up blank.

Surely many of the US citizens have required and signed pre-nup agreements to protect themselves, especially with 50% of first marriages in the US and 66% of second marriages ending in divorce. (It might be even higher marrying a foreign person, but that might be another topic of interest). While it's a topic that many couples hate to discuss, since I own several businesses, including some with partners, I really have no choice. I was up front with Dora from our second day together and we have discussed it from time to time and she has no problem with it, so the concept is not going to be a shock. I presume that the exact details of what can be covered vary from state to state as do divorce laws, but does anyone have some good examples or templates to use?

For those have gone through this, what did you consider to be a "fair" settlement, especially if your foreign spouse came from a country with comparitively much lower standard/cost of living?

Yes, I belive in total transparency - if the woman would not consider a pre-nup or it would be an argument, END OF RELATIONSHIP. Why bother wasting time - hers or mine? The other end of the spectrum was my friend who introduced Dora to me. She just got married a month ago, but called two days before her wedding angry, mad, sad, you name it, because her fiance' sprung the "you have to sign this pre-nup or I am not getting married" on her. It was even in English and although her comprehension is good, for a legal document it wasn't that good.

Dora is the most fabulous woman (for me) that I have ever met, but I still am not taking chances, since "odds" are against us. And I lost waay too much in my first divorce (which is obviously a strong driving force for me).

If you feel you need a prenupt, think carefully about getting married in the first place. It's a cop out.

Not when you are marrying anyone from the red.

Maybe your wife felt it was necessary to protect herself. Prenupts are a cop out. Why bother getting married if you are worried about it ending before it takes place?

We actually don't have a prenup. However, if I was to marry anyone from a 2nd or 3rd world country, I would get it. How many cases in this forum alone have I read of people jumping from marriage to marriage, or meeting someone else; coincidentally after they get a visa. Marriage to many from such countries is a gateway to a better life. You and I may not see it like this, but it is for many.

I guy I know of (a friend's friend) was scammed like this by a Russian girl. He was a really nice guy but just naive.

I guess the point I am trying to make is be sure or as sure as possible before you jump into marriage. Especially with someone you really don't know. And you know as well as I do that you don't really know a person until you are living with them.

I have no personal problem with Pre-Nup's...but if you do go this route do make sure that your wife to be gets to present the agreement in front of her own lawyer....even if you have to pay for it, it will help you in future if the question of "signed under duress" ever comes up.

I have a prenup.

It was the consequence of a first marriage that ended in a terrible divorce.

I swore to myself that no matter how perfect and wonderful the new person in my life may be, I was simply never ever going to get in a position where I was as financially exposed as I was during my divorce. The prenup is not a reflection on my wife or how much I love her, it's a reflection of my own insecurities and need to prevent the pain I went through from happening ever again.

Check the laws in your state, prenuptial agreements are not recognized in the state of Wisconsin. And who in the hell came up with no-fault divorce laws? Especially if one spouse drives the home into near bankruptcy, an alcoholic, gambler, or just doesn't give a damn. And if there is only one can of beans left, that person is entitled to half that can. To further make things super nasty, the responsible spouse is also held liable for all the debts that miserable low down spouse made.

LOL, no wonder why it took me eight years to even look at another woman, but found one with an ex spouse exactly like mine, first we shared our experiences than gave each other moral support, then buried that. Found we developed a very strong platonic relationship and a very strong dependence on each other. Then we met with also an extremely strong physical attraction. Trust is key in a relationship, we had that trust from the very beginning and still have it after six years.

Can say, more than met my share of gold diggers, lot's of those running around, just have to be half awake to detect that. There are some very good women in this world, but the word, world is key here.

Absolutely - but more so because I want to be very open and fair with her. I absolutely don't think she is a gold digger, but you can't be too sure. I was married to my ex for 22 years and was able to build a very comfortable lifestyle - one to which she said "I am just not comfortable with all this". But when it came time to divvy up things she sure as hell wanted waay more than half....I got the "Hell no, you are going to maintain me in the manner and style to which I have become accustomed". No matter how much I love and trust Dora NOW, I am not leaving anything to chance - I am too old to rebuild a third time.
