will my fiancee going on welfare hurt our case?

my fiancee usually works a factory job, but times are tough in his small town and they are not hiring for the season.

if he goes on welfare/unemployment, will that hurt our case?

if what he does is brought up at our interview, i'm afraid they won't like his using an unemployment check to move to the u.s. :\

what should we do?

thanks in advance, guys

Well it is what it is - not much (if still unemployed at the time) can be done about it. Unemployment (which isn't welfare) does count as income although it is by nature temporary and will be viewed in this light.

Backup plan would be to secure a qualified Co Sponsor.

If the fiancee is the USC, it can hurt your case since income becomes factor. If it is not the USC then it does not become an issue.

maybe i should explain...

my fiancee is the canadian/beneficiary.

i am the petitioner and i already have a co-sponsor.

but as the person coming to the united states- will it look bad for him to be receiving welfare?

we are waiting on packet 4.

They only ask about your income (USC). They don't care about his.

No they don't care about his income. As an aside, Employment Insurance (which is what they call it in Canada) is not welfare, it's a benefit that people pay in to and have to qualify for :)

thanks for the info! i just don't want the people at the consulate thinking he's going to be on welfare in the u.s. too. hopefully he can secure a job in the next week, so it doesn't come to having to collect employment insurance.

ps: sorry i offended you in another thread. i agree that i worded things wrongly :\

The USCIS will look at your CO-Sponsors income and your income. They will not look at what he makes in Canada because it's irrelevant. When he arrives here he will not longer make Canadian money anyway. They just want to be sure he is going to be cared for and that someone is willing to take the responcibility to do that. It's not about his money (It's about yours)

You are a real worrier bogatnoir! Whether he's on EI, or if he's receiving social assistance is irrelevant. He won't be on either once he gets the visa anyway and he won't be collecting "welfare" once he's in the U.S. either, as you, and your co-sponsor will be supporting him until he can work. Stop worrying!

Even if he was a CEO in a big company he would have to leave his job....so they don't care what the beneficiary makes...

correct - they don't care if he received UI in Canada - his Cdn income (of whatever description) doesn't figure into things - you have no worries. They only want to know that you have the means to support him when he moves to the US
