"Smart" is cute. Don't think I have ever heard that. :)

You don't have to go all out but it's good to put some effort into looking nice. It shows that you're taking the occasion seriously, like a job interview as someone mentioned. We didn't exactly dress up but dressed nicely. No jeans, sneakers, old t-shirts. Khakis, button up shirts, nice shoes, things like this are good.

Good luck!! :D

Just be yourself and dress semi-casual.

Ok, our appointment was at 1.00pm. We arrived at 12.45pm, security were helpful and polite and advised us to go to the second floor. We went to the hole in the wall on the second floor and checked in, the receptionist was very nice and advised us to take a seat and our names will be called out.

At 1.14pm our names were called, we stood up and turned around but couldn't see where the lady who had called our names had gone to. We walked around the corner and the woman looked like we were putting her out. We both knew immiediately that this was not going to be a pleasent experience. She told us to follow her, so we followed her to her office, she didnt say a word. No ice breakers, no how are you doing today.

When we entered her office she sat down and as I was bending to take a seat she sternly says "STAND UP" so I stand up, and she adivses us to put up our right hand and swear to tell the truth etc, so we did. Then she says "SIT DOWN", she then silently flicks through her papers.

She then asks the basic questions to confirm name, dob, and asks me the list of questions on the i864. Then she goes through our evidence takes a few documents such as proof of marriage, flicks through our photo album, didnt say a word.

She then says do you realize there is a clause in your divorce papers. We asked what clause, she said the divorce papers that were filed in Alabama states my wife must not remarry within 60 days of getting divorced. HOWEVER we got married 25 days after the final day of judgement in Florida, not Alabama, for the specific reason that there there is no wait period for out of state residents.

When my wife told her this, the IO said "dont you live in Alabama?" as if to say it is wrong to get married in a different state, people get married in different states all the time e.g. Las Vegas, Nevada, it does not make any difference. When we got married in Florida, my wife brought her divorce papers and the courthouse checked it and gave it the OK.

The IO said she wasnt sure what the policy is with regards to a US citizen marrying an immigrant out of state and that she will contact their immigration attorneys.

The IO then said you will be notified of a decision by the end of the month.

It was a dreadful experience. My wife and I feel terrible, not knowing 1 individual controls the outcome of our family.

Oh, thats not good. I feel your pain because now you have to wait...sorry. When i was reading your post, i kind of got the feeling that the IO is just misinformed but she has to just clarify before she approves you. I have a good feeling about it and Im sure you will be approved. Hang in there and be patient.
