going on a group trip to Jordan to learn arabic from the university there? The flight, most meals, lodging, etc are covered in ur initial price. it's a 6 or 8 week course which teaches arabic in a school type setting and also takes field trips to places such as petra, jerash, dead sea, and various other landmarks of jordan.

I think the price is around 4500 dollars(ish)

Not sure about Syria but its the same cost w/ these types of programs....only issue is that Amal needs to learn the Arabic native to her husbands country and those going to Egypt would be learning another dialect.

If you google it...the costs are approx. the same. Only way to save money...pay for the program and find your own housing/airfare....however, some programs do not allow you to be "outside" their program when joining. Depends...I do know you could pay only 700 dollars for a course at the Amerian University in Egy and they will let you "commute" to campus it would be much cheaper w/ airfare and renting a flat.

Here is a link from summer 2009....give you an idea. Click on study abroad to download the PDF w/ programs.

Great idea Amal...wish I had the time to take off!!! Wooot!!!

i also think the syrian dialect would be closer to what would be spoken in jordan versus the egyptian one, but that's just me.

damascus is also a very safe city and the government/local authorities go overboard when it comes to the protection of its foreign presence/tourists etc. i never felt odd or unsafe there ever during my stay. it's also pretty cheap....way cheaper than jordan FTW.

i'm not hating on jordan, but i just think it's overpriced for no good reason.

if you wanted to go tour those jordanian tourist spots as well, you could do it for much cheaper than the program and all that for 4500 bucks. you can easily take a bus to jordan, get a cheap hotel, get a cheap tour guide who will guide you to all those spots, etc...

i dunno, good luck with whatever you decide!

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Thanks for ur helpful information.

My husband and I are starting a program with the Yarmouk University in Jordan to help people learn Arabic and commune with the locals there. The program would be discounted for larger groups (of course) depending on how many people sign up within a group. We haven't gotten all the prices figured out yet so 4500 may be too high depending on the cost of a plane ticket (which is currently around 1300 dollars).

The course itself is a 6 week accredited course in Arabic. The cost allows the University to provide meals, housing, transportation, and various other things for you during your stay.

The Arabic between Egypt and Jordan does vary a lot but between Syria and Jordan it varies a bit less.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Girl if I had that kind of money to throw down

I would love to see many parts of the world but I am having a hard enough time trying to figure out how we will afford getting back to Maroc in late May 2010. We will need about that much when it comes time for tickets and spending cash.

I really hubby was better at teaching me Arabic. I want to learn.

You might also want to look at the Language Center at the University of Jordan. They will teach you the standard Arabic with the option of the taking classes in the colloquial (Jordanian) Arabic.

I have sat in on a class at the Language Center. It was really nice and I was really impressed at how much more these students knew than the students in my classes (in the states.) I have been taking Arabic classes for three years and I am not fluent. They have students that have been studying less than two years and are completely fluent. I was impressed at how they can carry on a conversation without thinking about what they are saying or about what is being said to them. I would love to have taken classes there. The classes that we take in the states are Standard with the Egyptian dialect. So, I still have to learn the Jordanian dialect from my husband.

I am including the link to the language center for you. I hope you enjoy your classes. I have loved studying Arabic. You can learn so much faster studying overseas. I wish you luck and enjoy the experience.
