Steve thanks for posting, I had not seen it.

What can I say, it was a great speech seemed very effective and well received.

This is the exact kinda speech I and many others would want and expect a president to make to students.

I thought the "keeping kids home" things was way silly even if Obama did go through with his earlier lesson plan because

There is nothing he is going to tell a Kid, I can't undo at the dinner table if needed :)

A message of personal responsibility...what a concept.

Like HE knows anything about that.

Oh brother. Are you the USC or the New Zealander?

I fail to see the brainwashing in this speech...

Someone had told me he told the students not all of them are going to "reach for the stars" and "make it" and all this mumbo jumbo #######... i didn't hear that once, the only thing even close to that was "Chances are you're not going to be rapper or reality TV star. Being successful is hard. You wont love every subject you study... and you wont necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try, and that's OK."

All in all, I thought it was good

I live in the most liberal town imaginable. No criminal offense if you're carrying less than an ounce type liberal and yet the school system refused to air his speech to the kids today. Un flippin believable.

Very good Bill. I personally had a craving for lasagna.

I had lasagna yesterday, along with lumpia. It was very interesting, visiting our good friends in Napa. He's Italian-American, and the wife is, of course, Filipina. (My wife is such a matchmaker!)

Does your wife ever make Sinaygong (sp)? My mother-in-law has been cooking it for us over the last few weeks. Great with either pork rib or prawns.

I'm gonna have to make my way to see the lot of you people to try some of this cooking.

 I'm wondering if there's some local Filipino restaurants in your area?

Sinigang is basically a tamarind soup. The tamarind gives it a sour taste. There's asian eggplants, tomatoes, onions, asian string beans, baby bok choy, and I think parsnip. It's really tasty. :)

There must be. Likely close to the Vietnamese area close to where Sister Fracas lives. Hmmm...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

The wife is home, and she tells me that we just bought the spice packets for that, and some other dishes last Sunday. She tells me she makes it all the time. I just remember walking through the Asian store, and she kept asking me to buy this, and that, and when she was done, we went to the register. All that stuff is dirt cheap, so I don't mind, and she is happy as can be to find stuff that is Pinay made.

Look for Jolibees and Max's. Not the best restaurants, but they are located in Filipino communities, and that gives you a starting point to begin your search.

In Chicago you say? Hmmm. Will do.

As for tamarind itself... love the stuff. I eat the fruit raw and it makes great juice... but it is also good for cleansing oneself if strong enough.

They are chain restaurants in the Philippines, and they are often found in Filipino communities here. Another one is Goldilocks, and that is a favorite, especially for baked goods.

I see. I don't think the community is that large here... but I can get some dishes at some pan-asian places without any problem. Of course I want it a little more exclusively Filipino so I'll check. I forget a few friends over here are in the know.

Checking out of this Asylum for tonight.

Hey Hal, you make honest money? Or do you depend on me to write your check every month?

I will ask her. She likes a lot of dishes I don't care for, and she doesn't like some of the dishes I really love. I am more meat and fresh greens. She likes fish and boiled vegetables. So, we have a mix of negociated dishes we both love. Adobo is a mutual favorite. But, when she is cooking for her friends, she is very creative, and comes up with some interesting dishes.

I'm willing to try most anything. The other day my MIL cooked up some dried sardines (they call them something else though) and I watched my father-in-law how to eat them - grab some in you hand, dip them into some vinegar and then add some rice. It wasn't bad. I watch Andrew Zimmerman for inspiration...that guy will eat anything.

It was probably herring. They call it tuyo. Very stinky when they cook it. That was the source of the famous thread in the PI forum.
