Make the kids watch Glenn Beck afterward if it eases your anxiety. Have them genuflect before a poster of Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter. But don't be so paranoid about what might happen if they're briefly exposed to the sinister charms of a liberal president that you drag them down into your foxhole of craziness.

Or, at the very least, save the dragging for after school.

http://www.tnr.com/blog/the-plank/obamas-p...h-your-children

I could watch most things.. could deal with most but no way could I sit and watch glen beck, I've never heard or seen someone talk so much $hite before! We actually pay (well get raped by) the cable company just to watch this halfwit and the millions of adverts they spew on the screen?

Stephen, how could Obama have screwed up such a simple thing as this?

If this had been what you suggest it to be, I would have said it's a "great idea" in fact I think it is a tradition I think every president might want to follow.... Addressing students at the start of the school year.

But even a simple thing such as this mucked up with the details (which I think you left out)

http://www.newmediajournal.us/education/09032009.htm

Why would part of this address to students divert into to students being assigned to write a paper on "How I can help the President"?

Of course due to objections they have changed the wording, but is Obama himself behind this type of "Everything is about me" tone or the worshiping people who surround him?

Again, I think many on the right are over reacting about this, in fact knowing what we know about the Obama Klan, if the Right were clever, they would have kept their mouth shut until after he spoke and Then... they would have had more political Ammo to sling. (politically speaking)

I think the President addressing students is a good idea I just wish Obama could get it right by making it about education and service to country in broad terms.

Again.... Obama; How do you even screw up something this simple?

Schoolchildren across the nation "will be forced to watch the president justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other president."

Politifact Ruling on this claim:

tom-pantsonfire.gif

Also, Danno, not sure whether you noticed that the Dept. of Education has modified the classroom materials to read:

"Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short–term and long–term education goals. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

Gee, Danno, how can you not grasp something this simple?

Dude, you are shadow Boxing.

The fact that they "changed" the request ofr students to "write a paper on how you will help the President" is meaningless.

It was clearly an idea of Team Obama which the withdrew when the public recoiled.

Now again, I have no problem with Obama speaking a brief motivational type message to school kids if he can keep politics out of it, I think it might make a nice tradition.

I don't see this as Evil big government.

The Principal’s Soapbox

I’ve had a few parents contact me with what appears to me as extreme emotional reactions to the thought that students might be asked to watch or listen to President Obama’s speech on September 8th. I’m not sure what it is that parents fear their sons and daughters might hear from President Obama; therefore, I lack the understanding of such reactions.

As I understand it, President Obama’s speech is about staying in school and earning the high school diploma. I have not read the speech—as it will be posted later today—but I understand that he will talk about the obstacles that he had to overcome and how his success all began with a high school diploma. These are good words for all students to hear. I want to see 100% of our students earn their high school diploma and move on to some form of post-secondary education. I believe we all want that, so I’m having trouble trying to understand why some people are opposed to the message.

Another reason that I am having trouble understanding the resistance is because we live in America, a country founded upon democratic principles. Very basic to democracy is the ability and willingness of the citizens to consider the ideas of others from a position of suspended judgment. When we suspend judgment, we are able to consider varying perspectives and are then better able to determine whether we agree with a perspective or not. This is a process called reasoning and comes from a process called critical thinking. Therefore, rejecting President Obama’s message without hearing it is committing an act against reason and against critical thinking. I cannot fathom why anyone would act in such a way.

Finally, President Obama is not the first president to address the nation’s students, and I doubt he will be the last. Whether I’ve supported past presidents or spoke out against their policies, I have always admired their willingness to address our children and to inspire them. We should all listen to our president, regardless or our personal political views.

This was sent via email to the parents of the kids at my son's school.

Good for him, standing up to the ignoranamous' who have nothing to do but b!tch and complain about stuff for the sake of complaining about Obama.

I bet people are afraid he'll slide something in about health care, saying that he hopes that everyone in our country should have access.

Your problem, and that of those who oppose this is purely interpretive. I think the president should outline things much plainer, so that even the simplest person cannot misconstrue what he means. He is simply trying to get his message out to the youth of america directly, so that there is no misinterpretation done by adults for them. Was it worded poorly? Perhaps, but it is certainly nothing nefarious as some would suggest.

When you speak of misinterpretation do you mean...like when he was running for office and he said...

"I am gonna create 3,000,000 jobs" and some of us thought he meant "create 3 million jobs" or

when he changed it and said "I meant I am going to create or SAVE 3,000,000 jobs" and some of us thought he meant "create of SAVE 3 million jobs" or

when he changed it and said damn "I meant I am going to SAVE 3,000,000 jobs" and we thought he meant he was gonna "SAVE 3,000,000 jobs" when in reality all along he really meant

"I am gonna do what I can like anyone would and when the economy finally fixes itself eventually and some jobs return I can claim I actually saved and created some jobs because there REALLY is no way to prove I SAVED anything."

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....I C
