According to Politico, the Right is up in arms about President Obama's plans to deliver a back-to-school address to students next Tuesday at noon (EST). It seems many are convinced that this is a not-so-secret plot by POTUS to, as the head of the Florida GOP put it, "indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda." Radio gasbagger Tammy Bruce has gone so far as to encourage parents to keep their kids home that day. "Make September 8 Parentally Approved Skip Day. You are your child's moral tutor, not that shady lawyer from Chicago," she tweeted. This is disgraceful. For starters, Obama's message, as described in a press release from Ed Sec Arne Duncan, will stick to anodyne topics like the need to work hard and take responsibility for one's own success (which once upon a time were values Republicans could cheer.) Admittedly, I don't have an advance text, but I'll bet a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey that Obama will not be lecturing America's youth about the joys of bank bailouts, universal health care, or cash-for-clunkers--just as I am confident George W. Bush would never have used school children to hawk the Iraq war, the Medicare drug program, or "enhanced interrogation" techniques. ####### Cheney, maybe. But not Bush.

More broadly, Obama is the leader of this entire nation. It doesn't matter if you voted for him--or even if your head threatens to explode every time you think about him. He is the president, and, as such, it's a big deal that he's speaking directly to students about the importance of education. (Not teachers unions, you hysterics.) And, whatever one's party registration, the idea that any child should be kept home from class purely so their parents can make a political statement about an apolitical speech is appalling. Is the idea that we should shelter children from any contact with or knowledge of any president we personally dislike? Maybe, during the years our preferred party is out of power, we should just pretend that the president doesn't exist. That's a healthy way to run a democracy.

Admittedly, Obama is smooth. But he ain't smooth enough to wipe away an entire childhood of conservative teachings with one quickie speech about (all together now!) working hard in school. Buck up, all you deep-red wingers: Make the kids watch Glenn Beck afterward if it eases your anxiety. Have them genuflect before a poster of Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter. But don't be so paranoid about what might happen if they're briefly exposed to the sinister charms of a liberal president that you drag them down into your foxhole of craziness.

Or, at the very least, save the dragging for after school.

Stephen, how could Obama have screwed up such a simple thing as this?

If this had been what you suggest it to be, I would have said it's a "great idea" in fact I think it is a tradition I think every president might want to follow.... Addressing students at the start of the school year.

But even a simple thing such as this mucked up with the details (which I think you left out)

http://www.newmediajournal.us/education/09032009.htm

Why would part of this address to students divert into to students being assigned to write a paper on "How I can help the President"?

Of course due to objections they have changed the wording, but is Obama himself behind this type of "Everything is about me" tone or the worshiping people who surround him?

Again, I think many on the right are over reacting about this, in fact knowing what we know about the Obama Klan, if the Right were clever, they would have kept their mouth shut until after he spoke and Then... they would have had more political Ammo to sling. (politically speaking)

I think the President addressing students is a good idea I just wish Obama could get it right by making it about education and service to country in broad terms.

Again.... Obama; How do you even screw up something this simple?

Your problem, and that of those who oppose this is purely interpretive. I think the president should outline things much plainer, so that even the simplest person cannot misconstrue what he means. He is simply trying to get his message out to the youth of america directly, so that there is no misinterpretation done by adults for them. Was it worded poorly? Perhaps, but it is certainly nothing nefarious as some would suggest.

Just more wingnuttery from our friends on the ever widening right edge of the GOP. To even pretend that promoting personal responsibility and hard work towards personal accomplishments is peddling a "socialist agenda" to the students of this nation is utterly ridiculous. Aren't the same people always claiming that both of these concepts are entirely at odds with socialism?

"Why is it political for the president of the United States to discuss education? It was done at a nonpolitical site and was beamed to a nonpolitical audience. . . . They wanted to reach the maximum audience with the maximum effect to improve education."

The above quote is from Newt Gingrich in 1991 when he responded to unjust criticism from two Democrats of President George H. W. Bush addressing the nation's students in a telvised speech during school hours.

But then, Newt is just another RINO I suppose...

Oh, and there's no record of Democrat parents keeping their kids out of school that day.

Schoolchildren across the nation "will be forced to watch the president justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other president."

Politifact Ruling on this claim:

Also, Danno, not sure whether you noticed that the Dept. of Education has modified the classroom materials to read:

"Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short–term and long–term education goals. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."

Gee, Danno, how can you not grasp something this simple?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

That's it. It's because suddenly its been leaked out that the president is black.

Don't forget Kenyan, Muslim, and a Socialist.

Make that American, Racist, Communist and all around nut and you've got Obama's Green Czar, Van Jones.
