Hello everybody, thanks for all your help with bringing my Colombian fiancée over to the states. I have a question. My fiancée would like to get married with her family and friends. Is this possible with a K-1 visa? Would it be possible to bring her immediate family over for the marriage, or have a second marriage in Colombia later on? How did people here handle this problem? Thankyou,

-Andrew

You have to have your legal wedding in the United States, there's no way around that. If her family can get there, they can be part of it by all means, but if they cant get there and you want to do a wedding for her family, after she gets her green card and is able to travel again, you can have a non legal/ceremonial wedding in Columbia.

It seems quite a few people do this, since it's hard to get all of everyone's family in one place.

I encountered the same issue. Wait till she gets her 2 year conditional green card and then have another non legal marriage in Columbia. For the purposes of K1 and to file your adjustment of status, the legal marriage must take place here within 90 days of her arrival in the US.[/b]

Good luck on your journey.

Hi,

Glad you have found someone special that you want to spend your life with. As you can see with my timeline, my wife just received her 10 year green card and it has been such a simple non stressful experience. I know many do have horror cases, but I just wanted to pass along a good experience report to give you some hope and motivation. First, you will need to get married in the states. Second, unless her family already has a tourist visa, they will probably not be able to come. My inlaws own several businesses, have extensive ties to Colombia, and still have not been granted a tourist visa simply because they have two daughters in the US married to Americans. It is not fair, but it is what it is. However, what we did was arrange a wedding ceremony in Colombia (San Andres, great place, highly recommend!!) with her pastor and family. We made it a vacation and left for the US after the ceremony. It was not legal, but was fun and we felt 'Married'. We then came to the US and were officially married here with my pastor in his office. All very legal and all very correct. Correct for her family and the two of us, and the law. If you have any other questions please send me an email and I will be glad to offer any advice I can give you....Take care Greg

Alternatively, you may have any sort of celebration that is NOT a marriage, in Colombia AFTER she has the visa. The terms of the K1 visa is that she enter the USA as your fiance, (so you cannot be married first) and that the marriage take place in the USA. No special privileges are offered to the family of a K1 visa holder. If her family can obtain visas, great. If not, so be it.

My fiance will be arriving in three days from Colombia (OMG!!! I can hardly believe that we'll be together at last), and the first thing we plan to do is to get married by the justice of the peace in our hometown. Once he receives the green card, we'll go to Medellin, and have a Catholic ceremony along with the biggest wedding reception that city has ever seen!

My husband and I got married in India in August. His parents were unable to make it. So it was just for my friends and family. Once I get there, we will have 'another' ceremonial wedding for his friends and family and of course our friends from college. We owe them a treat. I'm excited that I get to have two weddings.

We are just planning to have a civil wedding here in the States and then later when she has a green card and can travel. We are planning on having our Catholic ceremony in Poland where both of our families can be. Since all my family is in Poland besides my parents and brother they are in the UK since my brother is going to school there now. So over here in America we both really don't have any family that could attend. Kinda lonely sometimes not having any family around and being the only Pole from my family to be here kinda sucks at times. Anyways we are planning on having a big wedding with all our family and friends around 150 people or so on the guess list so far.
