Tax returns vs. tax transcripts?

Hey everyone. I had a quick question I was hoping someone could answer. After browsing both James's and LingChe's shortcuts, both recommend submitting tax transcripts with the I-864. I was just curious--do these replace the standard tax returns the NVC requests, or do I need to submit tax transcripts in addition to my tax returns? Thanks so much for your help.

You only need tax transcripts. No need W2s, 1099s or returns as Tax transcripts show you filed. Returns don't and can be faked/

I just got my tax transcripts. Took 5 days from when I called to get them and I live in Hawaii.

You can have them faxed to you the same time you call if you call during business hours.

tax return is 1040 definitely you need to submit them , while a tax transcript is a proof of your current tax return , a statement of where you derived your income for the entire year , hope this helps , good luck.

Copies of 1040s don't hold much water as there is no proof you even filed them. Tax transcipts come from IRS showing you filed and a brief breakdown of your income for that year.

I imagine it won't be to long before IRS will require tax transcripts from everyone. 1040s are to easily faked.

I feel for you. :( I'm getting all of this out of the way now, while my I-130 is still processing, so that once I get my NOA2 I can literally fly through the NVC.

So Haole, just so I'm clear, you went through this process with the NVC, only sent the tax transcripts, and had no problems? I'm submitting both an I-864 and an I-864A, and I have three years worth of tax transcripts for both, but I want to make certain I don't hit an RFE by not including the 1040s.

I sent both 1040s and 3 years tax transcripts. I'm self employed and don't/didn't have W2s or 1099s.

I filed an I-864 and an I-864A. I submitted only a 2008 tax transcript for myself, but 3 years of tax transcripts for my household member. Went through with no problems.

The only time I would suggest that you also submit W-2's in addition to the tax transcripts is if your co-sponsor files jointly with their spouse, this way you're showing his/her individual income---tax transcripts show the joint income. So for example, if your Dad files jointly with your Mom, and he happens to be your co sponsor, just add a couple W-2's that just state his individual income, or even a letter from his employer would suffice. And you should be good to go!

MnM--thanks! This is actually something I was going to ask about in another thread. I'll post a link here; could you let me know what you think?

  • 2 weeks later...
IRS says they don't provide transcripts until 1 year after they are filed. What have people done for the tax year 2008? thanks.

Definitely not true. I requested my 2008 transcript maybe 2 months after I filed and got it without incident. If your return has been processed, you should be able to get it.

From the form: "Return transcripts are available for the current year and returns processed during the prior 3 processing years."
