My wife has an IR-1 and we arrived in the states a couple days ago. On the DS230 we requested a social security number.

How long will it take for her to receive a social security number via mail?

It is not possible to work before receiving the SSN?

Also, can someone tell me the exact website address for informing Immigration of a new address?

Last but not least, we were told that it is ok for her to leave the country before she gets her permanent green card. Am I correct in believing that after leaving the country she will always be allowed back in as long as she has spent more time in the U.S. than outside (I am aware of the form that she must file if she plans to be out of the states for more than a year).

SNN usually takes 2-3 weeks to arrive. She can look for work before that (the stamp on the visa in her passport allows her to work and travel), but few places will take her application without a SSN number.

Yes she can travel, no need for the physical green card. What you say is technically correct, though if she travels a lot/ for long times even if it's less than a year, they may give her a hard time when she tries to re-enter.

As a side note, after 3 weeks we went down to the SSA office to find out my husband's SSN as he needed it for a job. Immigration had not even requested one yet, even though we checked that option, so they issued on there on the spot.

If you haven't received the SSN after 3 weeks, take her passport and welcome letter to your local SSA office and they will assign her a SSN immediately.

I got mine 12 days after interview/ 10 after POE, so the wait wasn't that much. But yes if you don't get it go to the Social Security office and ask.

During the entire 90s and up until 2005 I didn't know I was supposed to provide the change of address within 10 days. I went a good 10 years moving here and there and never informing them of my whereabouts...
