Hey Guys!

Fiance is finally here, we didn't wait 2 weeks because he is too anxious to get his driver's license to get on his feet and drive around. We went to the Social Security office yesterday and ... the lady said, k1 visa's don't automatically generate a social security number at the POE. Basically, we didn't need to wait 2 weeks --- because she have to generate a new social security number. She gave us a receipt and said we will receive our social security # in the mail in 2-3 weeks.

We also went to the DMV yesterday... we live in Los Angeles.. and the DMV representative said, as long as we have a SSN and clears in their system, he's able to obtain a driver's license.

Anyhow, wondering if any of you have similar experience?

Did i do everything correctly?

not as cut and dried as you think it is... Whatever he gets will expire with the I-94 (aka Legal presence document) unless you can provide another document that extends the legal stay.

From the Cali DMV website

Limited Term Legal Presence

All original and pending driver license or identification cards will expire on the expiration date of his/her birth date and legal presence document (BD/LP) issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Your BD/LP document must have an expiration date 30 or more days from your application date. If your BD/LP document has an expiration date less than 30 days, you will not be able to start a driver license or identification card application.

If your BD/LP document has an expiration date of less than 60 days, you may complete your licensing requirements (written/vision/driving tests), but you will need to submit another BD/LP document with an expiration date of 60 days or more before your driver license or identification card is mailed to you.

Before your limited term driver license expires, the department will mail out an “extension” letter with instructions on how to complete your application for a driver license.

If your current name no longer matches the name on your birth date/legal presence document, see "True Full Name" and "How to Change Your Name" for more information.

YMMV

That's great! In the state of Indiana, they issued me SSN within 1 week, it went very smoothly and then again in a week with my married name on it. As for the DL, they told me to come back with a green card!!! So I studied for 2 weeks, memorized the whole driver's manual and they turned me away. I was so disappointed. Anyways, I'm driving with my Canadian driver's licence until I get a green card.

The Lord is my strength and my shield,

My heart trusted in Him and I am helped,

therefore my heart greatly rejoices,

and with my song I will praise Him.

It feels so bad to be turned away but its good you can drive with Canadian driver's licence. We hope you get your green card soon!

Come on!

Probably he needs to learn the patience!

Yes, normally Korean guy doesn't like to be on the waiting-list, and put in the back seat. :innocent:

Marking Social security issue request in DS-156 form works sometimes, but sometimes it's not.

As long as you use same information from DS-156 form, Social Security Admin office will figure out.

It usually takes up to 10 days for mail delivery for Social Security Card.

For Driver License, it is up to local DMV.

But in most case, they check immigration status and expiry date.

If he is K1, I wouldn't recommend for Driver License since it is only valid for 90 days from entry date.

DMV will issue the Driver License with whatever expiry date in his immigration paperwork.

Probably it's time to learn English by studying "Driver's manual", which can be picked up from local DMV. :innocent:

And spend some time from local public library to learn English and others.

Putting in ESL class?

Actually I spent 6 months from local "free" ESL class when I came in to enjoy my free time.

*P.S. Also, please remember to take photos, and other evidences for proving bona-fide marriage since he will get 2-year green card, and you need bona-fide marriage proofs for I-751.

Hi Moonhunt!

Thanks for your input^^ Your right! Because Community College costs like $200 per unit. but once he has his Social Security # i think he's able to register as a residence rate. I have to look into them....

But I thought about maybe putting him in adult school>?< i don't know if he would feel so out of place though...

He really has a lot of pride** and he had such a great status and job back in Seoul... he's taking his time in adjusting^^

Sigh** just wish this was easier ~~

Your right... about the DMV. Actually he has a korean international drivers license and he can drive.. but he refuses to because he feels that his name is not on my insurance yet =(...

anyhow... i guess now we are finally together and faces all new challenges together.
