There's an old saying 'you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar'....I don't suck up to my boss (who's a real @#$!@#$ btw)...but I do try to be nice/sweet/professional. (This is the salon job btw, not the real estate job)....our salon mgr left, so I'm referring to the DM who is a real piece of work. Others in the salon either look down and try to stay out of her way when she's there, or if she comes up with craptastic ideas, they fight her on it. I let her speak, validate her like 'oh that's a great idea, BUT have you thought about this?' Turns out, she always sees my POV. She's friendly to me, open to my ideas, and even has spent some of the dwindling salon budget on sending me to advanced training courses with pay. Everyone else, she harps on the fact that they don't work enough hours, but I can come and go as I please.

My colleagues are all my friends, they shake their heads and laugh. I tell them if they played the situation the same instead of they way they do, they could get the same things. My closest friend at work hated her, was always confrontational, etc...this DM made her life a misery until my friend said 'I'm either quitting, or leaving here in handcuffs' She did quit.

I certainly don't suck her azz, but I show my DM that I'm not afraid of her, and that I welcome all her ideas. In turn, she doesn't feel the need to 'show me who's boss'....it's all about recognizing who you are dealing with so that you can manipulate them to make them give you what you want :D

excellent advice sister lisa....

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

My post was based more on the corporate level, where an entirely different point of view can be had then working for a small proprietorship, in particular a family owned business where you are the outsider. Always get stuck with the worse jobs, had such a job in high school working for that Hungarian baker. Or working as a mechanic in a small shop. If a stall wasn't open, was expected to work outside laying on the ground in sub-zero weather, certainly gave me questions as to whether I wanted to spend the rest of my life in this misery.

Step daughter went through the same thing not wanting to attend college after high school and working in places like this, told her that would happen, but you can't tell some people they would burn their hand by sticking it in a boiling pot of water until they experience it. She is back in college now, and studying very hard. In her last job working for a family running a Mexican fast food place, if her boss, his wife, or his daughter spilled something on the floor, she was on her hands and knees cleaning it up. No amount of sucking up would change that.

Not sure why you quoted my post for this, other than to point out that I'm working in a blue collar job? (I'm there for the group health insurance, as I'm self employed elsewhere, but I'm not ashamed of my job either way) But I've taken many 'psychology of people' courses, read many books and the like, and I can say in my experience...both in blue collar jobs, the corporate world...hell, even with personal dealings with people or even your credit card companies over the phone...there is a way of handling people where you can make them feel like they are the ones making the choices you want them to make. I'm not saying you can control everyone...but instead of treating someone how you want to be treated...the difference is treating someone how (S)HE wants to be treated...there's a diffference, because every personality is different, so recognizing who a person is...be it a boss, customer, colleague, etc....will help you be able to approach them in a way that makes everything easy peasy :D

I believe that's why (see bold).

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I thought the same thing, but I don't wanna jump to conclusions. Not getting personally offended, cos I work that job because I want to and it's fun....but if that is the case, it's a bit snobby to look down one's nose at those who work BC jobs. *shrug* Working at the 'corporate level' doesn't make one better than another.

I work for the government and see the suck-up behavior all the time. I know people do it here because a lot of the time, those are potential participants on the interview or hiring board for a promotion. Right now, there is a job that they have designated, but are taking an exhorbitant amount of time to create. But that hasn't stopped people around here from sucking up to all the supervisors and gatekeepers in the building. I don't mean to sound sexist, but in my experience, sucking up is really only successful for women. When a woman does it overtly, she's being friendly. When a man does it overtly, he's a kiss as$ no #### pvssy loser. That's just the prevailing attitude where I work and at previous jobs in both the public and private sector.

Any time i worked a corporate gig, i had to open up jars, cans, and lug around furniture for "the men."

That, and then fit their laundry lists into an excel worksheet.

You know the old saying don't let your principles get in the way of your paycheck.

I usually, handle my A_Hole boss with a bit of sarcastic humor....

For example,, when I took this new position,,, he said,,, I would be traveling alot,, mostly to the arm-pits of the world.

I said, "Ted, there is no-where I'd rather be, then in one of your arm-pits"...

He got the point,,, but, can't really use it against me...

Regards,
