RIO DE JANEIRO (Dow Jones)--Brazil's once-booming economy slipped into recession in the first quarter.

Brazil's GDP shrank 1.8% year-on-year in the first quarter, and contracted 0.8% compared with the fourth , according to data released Tuesday by the country's statistics institute.

The first-quarter result combined with the fourth quarter's 3.6% decline from the third quarter to push Brazil into the technical definition of a recession: two-consecutive quarters of falling GDP.
