A man got the shock of his life when he opened a loaf of bread and found a whole mouse inside.

North Antrim Magistrates Court heard how a man purchased a Hyndman's malt loaf from a supermarket in the Ballymoney area before Christmas 2007.

When he unwrapped the loaf he discovered the small lifeless mammal embedded in the base of the bread.

The judge fined the company, D Hyndman and Son Ltd, Maghera, £1,000 plus costs for placing unsafe food on the market.

I've been in a hurry trying to make tons of stuff at work before and just threw stuff into pants on a cart. I can understand how someone could just pull out the tray and toss the dough into the tin without looking. You kinda get into a groove and start tossing the dough in without thinking. Especially if you're making tons of stuff at like 3am.

That is a pretty big mouse though...

I checked the site of Sainsbury's to see how UK bread slice-size compares with US--and was able to find that loaf-size is not markedly different (half-loaf size of 400 g somewhat smaller than not-uncommon US loaf of 1 lb, full-loaf of 800 g somewhat larger than 24 oz), so that's probably an accurate assessment.

This is not a Sainsbury loaf Cherry. This is a Hyndmans! (and it's not pre-sliced )

It's a malt loaf, which are actually quite small in comparison to a normal loaf
