Did anyone just move with boxes and almost no furniture? Wondering the cost

Hi guys,

When I move, I'll be moving with approximately 70-80 boxes and 4 pieces of small furniture. A table, a small armoire, a coffee table and a chair.

Did anyone else move with this kind of load and how much did it cost you approximately and with who if you don't mind my asking. I'm trying to figure out a cost before calling companies for quotes as I still have boxes to pack of stuff in my grandparents basement.

Thanks.

I moved very little furniture but lots of boxes - probably 80 or so. The problem is that many of those boxes contained books - heavy books. I also had a number of plastic tubs of arts and craft supplies, plus some fine china that I had them package as well as move which added to the cost. Moving companies determine cost based on an equation of weight x distance so you really need to contact several different moving companies to get a good idea of what it will cost. If they have to go up or down stairs, if they also unpack for you, all these are extras added into the cost. For us it was several thousand dollars to move but the distance involved was nearly a thousand miles as well. We ended up going with Atlas Van Lines and had no problems. Everything was collected when it was supposed to be, delivered when it was supposed to be and all in good condition.

I don't want anyone unpacking for me and they won't have to take anything up any stairs. I'll figure it all out myself as I go along and they can dump everything in the living room and dining room which is on the first floor.

I'd say some of my boxes weigh almost nothing and some of them are heavy but not SUPER heavy.

I'm moving from Montreal to South Florida and hoping it doesn't cost me more than 1000$.

When my mother moved from Florida to Montreal, she moved an entire house basically, it only cost her 3500$ so I'm hoping I won't have to shell out more than 1000$

I have one piece of furniture a small side board and approximately 50 assoerted boxes. I am hoping that it will all fit in one reno cube from ABF - upack and it will cost $1348 US. I am not sure if you will be able to move to Florida for 1000 but you can use the website for estimates. An actual moving company is 2.5 to 3 times what a upack is.

Hope that helps.

So i went and counted all my boxes last nite and realized my sisters are also stored with mine. Thats why i counted 70-80.

I really only have 40 boxes to bring as I counted 28 of them and know i'll have at least 10 more with clothes, purses, shoes and some other personal items i need to pack. And I decided not to bring my armoire as my mom would like to keep it so really only 2 tables and 40 boxes. Should cut my costs considerably.

I also started picking up my boxes and there are maybe 10 heavy ones with books and my 800 dvd movie collection. Hopefully the price will be better. And of course i now tagged all my boxes with red tape so i don't take any of my sisters belongings with me

We paid $3400 for my belongings to come from Chatham, Ontario to just south of Atlanta, Georgia - minimal furniture but lots of heavy boxes.

I am still in the process of getting estimates but so far this is what I have.

Atlas quoted me $2800 from Niagara Region to New Jersey. I have a three bedroom house but the amount of stuff I have left to move will probably amount to a 1 bedroom. BTW - news to me - but I pay in US $. I was told that is standard for shipping to the US.

I have another company coming tomorrow.

Yeah not sure if it is the norm, but UPack quotes are in U.S. dollars as well.

Second quote (from North American Van Lines) came in at $3800 US!! YIKES!! They estimated less poundage and it was $1000 more than Atlas. I can't imagine that the service could be that different, they are both well known companies.

Wow, yes, seems to be very expensive to ship with a moving company.
