I'm on the K1 Petetion Visa and now at the stage of having just received the K Instruction packet (Form OF-169) from the Embassy. But my fiance and me have decided for me not to go to the States(he may come over to stay with me for a period of time) until the economic gets better. So, my question - Is there a expiration date for sending the form DS-230 Part I and Form 169 to the Embassy? I only know I will not be scheduled for an appointment until I sumit these forms. If there is no such requirement, then I will just put it on hold for a year or so, until at least 3 months before I want to move , then I will send those forms to the embassy to schedule the interview. Any insight on this is very much appreciated.

The petition approval is valid for 4 mos. the consulate has the discretion to extend the validity period. one year may be a stretch but then again it may not be... since the consulate is in control you need to ask them specifically what they are willing to do.

YMMV

Or you could complete the process knowing you have 6 months to enter on the visa before it expires.

I do not believe there is a way to "Halt" the process other than to postpone the interview when that time comes but as was said the consulate would need to give you direction on options.

since you have the P3 (instruction packet) you can hold this packet, but try not to sit on it for one year, probably 6-8 months then send it off.... you've gone too far to risk having your petition canceled and sent back to the states..... This economy will probably not get better for awhile, this could be the new trend now, who knows... it's probably best to complete the process and decide then...

Personally i think our economies just auto corrected. They were over bloated. Now the rest of things is catching up to the drop.

Hopefully it will stay where your salary is more in line with your bills :P

$4.50 / gal of gas was rediculous and $400,000 for a 3 bed room townhouse was equally nuts.

What scares me is im only 31 and i remember gasoline being $0.77 a gallon in high school

Some things in life you just have to dive in and "do". Hard to tell when the economy will get "better".

heya i'm not sure how long exactly that you have to send the forms in after you get the packet 3. From my experience, I received packet 3 and I hold it off for a long time. I actually emailed the US Consulate here to ask for an extension as the NOA2 has an expiration date. Mine was extended for another 4 months, that's after I emailed them. I think it's best if you email them and have it in black and white, rather than having a dispute later on.

Good luCK! :)

Try living overseas. Even at $4.50/gal gas is still cheap by what people pay in Europe. Americans are just spoiled.

Same with your $400,000 townhouse. It is all relative.

Example: In the US, the average home is 4-5 times your salary. In New Zealand, its more like 10 times your salary.

haha.. i personally find it easier with the cost of living to save overseas so spending more on a house is less of a concern because i have more left over every month. But thats just me :D

Americans are spoiled, it is true. On the other hand, housing is relatively cheap in Ukraine, but try buying one on $300 per month average income.

After living there I really find little to gripe about anymore. I would feel embarrassed knowing how my friends in Ukraine struggle.

And gas was 35 cents when I started driving! Yikes, I'm old.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts and suggestions.

I read in Q&A section in the consulate website as :

"I'm not ready to travel, can I postpone my visa application?"

"Yes, but stay in touch by writing at least once per year and let us know three months before you are ready."

I'm not sure if this applies to my situation. But whatever, I will write to consulate just to make sure I'm not taking risk.
