Hello,

my fiance and I meet in february 2008 when I was in the States studying. He then had a really good job, but in July 2008 he was laid of. HE hasn't been able to get a new job due to the economy. He does not have a lot of savings, I do have some (like $5000) and I could have my parents write me a letter stating the will help us with our financial situation. If I have understand everything right, this shouldn't matter, it's all on him? My fiance collect unemployment benefits but these will be due in June. We got our I-129 approved and my interview should be coming up this summer. I have a masters degree in economics and I'm swedish so I should be able to get a job myself as soon as I'm allowed to work. Will they consider this at all?

My fiance is working hard on getting a job, but so far no luck. HE has a bachelor degree but it's crazy how hard it is to find a job these days. Even if he finds a job he will only have been employed for a short period of time when it's time for my interview. What are we going to do? It will be hard for us to find a co-sponsor. Any advice?

Please help!

Thanks

Elin

He had a "good job", but now he's been unemployed for 10 months? Was he a construction worker or real estate agent?

What follows is my own opinion based on what I've learned in the past six months. If I'm wrong then I'm sure one of the veterans will be along to spank me!

Without adequate income or assets on your fiance's side, I don't know how you could do this without a co-sponsor. As beneficiary, your economic situation or job prospects don't really even come into play here. Your fiance is the one who is obligated to guarantee you won't become a public charge in the US. If you were applying for an H visa then it would be a completely different story.

That said, embassy employees are human beings. If your fiance could meet the minimum requirements then your earning potential might nudge them in the right direction, but that's a ####### shoot. I don't think they're required to consider it all. If they did, it's hard to predict if it would affect you positively or negatively. Maybe they'd think it less likely you'd become a public charge, which would be good. Maybe they don't like the idea of importing foreign workers at a time when the unemployment rate for US citizens is high, which would not be so good for you. Maybe they recently got burned by a financial adviser with a masters degree in economics!

I think your fiance should put some serious effort into finding a co-sponsor.

You need an American co-sponsor. That is number one.

You and your parents can do little to help. You could send the $5000 to your fiancee who will put it in his bank account and count it as assets, but it takes some $60,000 in assets to make up for not having an $18,000 per year job.

Yes, they can consider that you have a masters degree and employable assets, so to speak (being Swedish not necessarlity one of them, speaking English, yes, nationality doesn't matter) but you also need to consider that LOTS of Americans with masters degrees are out of work and another 400,000 lost their job last month (Don't worry though, it is less than the 600,000 that lost their job in March) so their are a few million masters degrees ahead of you in line for a job...and you won't be able to work for 2-6 months after you arrive anyway. By then there could be another 3 million or so out of work.

So line up an American co-sponsor and smile...it is only money. We get more next week!

You will likely need a co-sponsor. If he lands a job with annualized earnings that would exceed the 125% of the poverty limit then he can qualify as the sponsor.

If you had current employment that would continue when you arrived in the US that could be considered.

Line up the co-sponsor. Better to have one lined up and not need them.

I am in exactly the same situation. Last September I was about to send in all packet 3 documentation when my fiance lost his job. We do not have the option of a co-sponsor and so had to wait until April this year when my fiance eventually got another job (not a good job, pay is pretty bad but it's a means to an end).

Bear in mind he needs to be earning only $19000 to qualify as a sponsor. There are a lot of jobs which fall into this bracket.

Good luck and most importantly be patient.
