Barack Obama used his first cabinet meeting as president on Monday to promise action against

wasteful spending as Congress prepared to resume debate over his $3,600bn budget.

In a move intended to signal commitment to fiscal responsibility, Mr Obama ordered cabinet

members to deliver $100m of cuts within the next 90 days.

Critics ridiculed the measure as inadequate when weighed against his multi-trillion-dollar budget

but the president said it would be followed by other savings and “set a new tone” in Washington.

“We’re going to go line-by-line and page-by-page [through the budget] - $100m here, $100m

there,” he said. “Pretty soon, even in Washington, it adds up to real money.”

Congress is due to resume work on budget legislation after returning from recess this week,

amid mounting Republican attacks against Democratic spending plans and public unease over

the ballooning deficit.

Monday’s cabinet meeting took place without Kathleen Sebelius, the health secretary-designate,

who is the only remaining nominee still awaiting Senate confirmation.

Mr Obama waited until most of his nominees were confirmed to hold the first cabinet meeting,

three months after taking office. But the meeting took place without Kathleen Sebelius, the

health secretary-designate, who is the only nominee still awaiting Senate approval.

Historians have hailed it the most diverse cabinet in US history, with seven women, nine ethnic

minority members and only eight white men among the 21-strong group.

The presidents cuts today remind me of my hair cut....I cut 10 inches off my hair.. I figure that will save the family budget a few dollars a month in conditioner.. I'd save a lot more if I canceled the frills like internet & cable and moved to a smaller apt. but hey! it's a cut in spending right?

OK, don't get me wrong here, but in which universe does $100m NOT constitute real money?

Have the kooks running the economy now gotten so used to sums of $1 trillion and upwards that a mere $100 million is no more to them than monopoly money?

OK, don't get me wrong here, but in which universe does $100m NOT constitute real money?

In the Universe where the government spends 3,600 billion dollars while saving $100m.

$100,000,000

vs

$3,600,000,000,000

If your annual budget is $100,000, that would be like saving $2.78 bucks.

Hey, I just spend $100,000, but I saved almost 3 bucks!

So 100m means nothing. What a sick joke.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills.
