I had the same problem..i applied for my social secury number then after 6 weeks i didnt receive my number..so i went back to their office then they again told me i need to wait for 2 to 3 weeks because they had error in it..instead of K-1 they put in their system V-1 as my status..and V-1 is not allowed to have ssn until i applied for EAD..so we went to another state to get married...now i am on my 2nd week again..i dont know why we need to wait 2 to 3 weeks for them to retreive their system...

Hi,

My fiancee applied for her social security card after 14 days upon her arrival in US.

After a month, we didn't get the card so we checked back with the SSA and they said it might take up to another 2-3 weeks because of their error.

I'm getting worried because her visa is about to expire and we can't get married because we don't have marriage license.

Is there a way for USCIS to extend her K-1 Visa? I mean we're trying to get married but we just can't!

You don't need a social security no. to marry. Try Las Vegas Wedding, no requirements needed except your fee, bride & groom. (lol) My friend just had a wedding there last Feb this year and she is on a tourist visa. Now, she's in a process of adjusting her status. Anyway, I got my social security almost a month from the day I applied and got green card in 3 weeks from date of arrival.

Jackson County, Mo County Clerk

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1) Both parties must appear together at the Record of Deeds office.

2) Both must be at least 18 years old to marry without parental consent. CLICK HERE for application requirements for those wishing to marry after their 15th birthday but prior to turning 18 -- as well as legal guidelines for marriages of individuals under 15 years old

3) Both must provide their Social Security numbers.

4) Both must have proper documentation.

I just spoke to the recorder of deeds (in Jackson County Mo.) and asked her if it was required. She said no - all your fiancé will need to do is sign a document/form stating she does not have one (a SSN). (She will need her passport though.)

(816) 881-1577

Question asked:

"My fiancé is from out of the country - does she need a social security number/card to get a marriage license?"

(This is why I asked if you spoke to a person or read it on the web site - many states list SSN as a requirement, but have the same/similar rules for folks who don't have one)

That's exactly right and this is the best example of why one should go straight to the horse's mouth (like Bobby says - the Clerk's office) for best information.

Within about two hours of us is a popular honeymoon spot - Ohio Amish Country. My husband and I considered marrying there. Holmes County information purported that applicants for a marriage license required Social Security numbers, but upon ringing them up I was told this requirement is often waived (many of the local Amish don't have Social Security numbers).

Always ring them or drop by in person if possible. It's far better than going by 'vanilla' info published on county websites.

This is absolutely the thing to do. Ironically, when our turn came, I phoned, and I was not told that I needed my SSN (or proof thereof) in order to receive a marriage license! Learning that reality upon showing up in person, I blew home, destroyed the inside of a drawer while fruitlessly looking for my SS card, and found only some U.S. savings bonds with my SSN on them. I took one back to the office; the clerk scratched her head, made a call to a supervisor, and said "OK!" That was the first and perhaps the last time that a savings bond will be submitted there for proof of a SSN, si man.

We married on Hallowe'en and had our celebratory party on Pearl Harbor Day, so who knows what that bodes for the marriage? At least we'll have our pick of good restaurants every Oct. 31, si man. :)

Returning to being serious: Under any circumstances, do NOT (do NOT! do NOT!) let that 90-day requirement slip by before marrying! Do whatever it takes (Las Vegas, or whatever) to comply with it. And, to be precise: It's the I-94 that expires in 90 days. The K-1 visa is "dead on arrival" at POE.

this may be a silly question but did you inform them that your fiance/e is a foreign national? that would preclude her from being able to have a SS#

My county in Colorado had a similar requirement for a Social Security number. They had a form to fill out to waive the social security number requirement. Suggest you inquire if they have the same document.

Go to Tennessee and get married or Las Vegas, many options that do not require SS Number.

It is the same in Nebraska.. no SSN necessary, just proof of ID (although the website makes it look differently).

We got caught with that, too. We were told on the phone that he'd need a social security number, so we went and applied. It didn't take too long, so we went to get the marriage license. THEN they told us "oh no, he doesn't need a SSN, but YOU need your actual SS# card". Sigh. Back to the social security office, then a wait for my actual card.... and I needed to apply soon after for one in my new name. It's ok, though - we got everything done in plenty of time.

That's a shame you've had to worry and wait. Best of luck getting everything done on time!

This has already been addressed and the OP has his answer. ;)

Although the website states that a ss# is required, the requirement can sometimes be waived if the person is here with legal status.
