On March 13th after my oath ceremony I went to my local SS office to do a name change and status change, I had all the proof and documents they needed it. I was told its not showing in the system that I am a US citizen soooooooo they copied my citizenship certificate and told me I should get my card in mail in 2 weeks and if there is a problem they'll send me a letter in 2 weeks. After 2 weeks of not hearing anything I called the SS office I they told me my case still pending I should get something in 2 weeks. It's been more than 1 months and nothing. So I had enough, today i fax my sate senator a letter asking him for help in getting my SS card. Anybody else had problem with SS office.

Visit SSA office and ask for superviser...

For DMV, I was o.k. by showing original certificate of naturalization.

But usually USCIS district office will mail you official "petition for name change" document signed by Court Judge in 2 ~ 3 months.

Some may ask for that documentation.

I've given up on getting a SS card.

I should've kept the one that says "not valid for employment". I went to get a replacement without those words after I got my GC, and had to surrender the original. After a few weeks, I went back to follow up and made a couple of phone calls. I don't even remember what the problem was. That was almost 3 years ago.

My 2 reasons for not pursuing that card:

1) I don't want to give up vacation days to wait in line in a Social Security office.

2) Is it just in that particular office, or are all Security Guards in SS offices so rude? The one in Pomona, CA acts like he is a Prison Guard and treats everybody like sh*t. And I mean everybody. It doesn't matter if you come in business attire: nice slacks, leather shoes and LV bag, or clothes that haven't been touched by detergent for weeks. He makes you sit and stares you down like you've been caught red-handed with some stupid crime. I was turning off my cellphone as i was walking in, and he yelled at me to turn it off. I said that's exactly what i was doing. He said to make sure it is off and not just in silent mode. I said I was turning it off. Then he said he wants to see it. I showed it to him, but he made me hand it over. He played around with the buttons trying to figure out how it works until he was satisfied that it was off.

I just wanted to say... what a jerk. It sounds like he really crossed the line when he messed with your phone!! On the other hand, it's a good idea to have a Social Security card, since it sounds like you are currently w/o one. I guess you don't really need the actual card unless you are applying for a new job...

Here is the other semi-recent SS heck thread: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=192368

The above is not legal advice.

It is either from research or merely my opinion.

Hi Everyone,

Likewise, I had a problem with the SSA office too....oh...about 3 years or so ago....

I was just "approved" at the AOS interview, and had a "temporary I-551 stamp" in my passport. So with that, I right away applied for a Social Security Card/Number, as according to their rules, I read that I could do such...

And after 8 weeks of waiting....Nothing......

So I called them up...and they told me that it was because they had to re-verify my immigration status, and they wanted to see my actual "non-temporary I-551 Green Card" (which I received a week later in the mail)....Gee....they could have just phoned and/or wrote me a letter and told me that before, instead of having me wait and wonder what the heck was going on.....

So in the middle of a snowstorm, I went to the "local" SSA office (oh, about 20 miles away), showed them my new green card, and got my Social Security Card in the mail 1-2 weeks later (and then applied for a driver's license, which I got about 1-2 weeks after that).

Lol...I'm not finished with the SSA yet, but let's hope that the next time around, they will give better service...

Overall though, I admit, the SSA is better than the USCIS, from my experience ...so I can't complain too much here.

Nevertheless, I hope that you all don't encounter too many problems with the SSA, and if you do, I hope you get those problems resolved soon too.

Good luck on the rest of your immigration journeys.

Ant (Still waiting...)

All I have to say is that if you have a problem with USCIS or SS office please do write to your Senator. That's why they are in the office to look after your state problems and the problem of the people in your state. Here is the copy of the letter I wrote to my Senator and got my SS card shortly after.

To: Your state Senator's Office

Fax: (000) 000-0000

From: Your name

Your name

Your address

April 14, 2009

Senator Mitch McConnell

Fax: (502) 582-5326

To Whom It May Concern:

I have filed for a name change and status change on my Social Security card at Frankfort office on March 13th, 2009. I did provide all the necessary documents with my request. It has been over 4 weeks since the filing of this application with the Frankfort Social Security office.

I request that you and your office check on the status of my application as the case processing time of 2 weeks has long come and gone. Calling Social Security office has proven to be futile in getting any sort of rational update as to what the delay might be.

My reference number with the Social Security office is 2222222 for this application. If there is any other information you need to help with my case please contact me at 555-555-5555.

Sincerely,

Your name

I updated my status today and the lady told me that it should take two weeks max, until I receive my new SS card. She said, if it takes longer than that, I definitely should inquire what's going on.

Name changes are common, especially for a woman that assumes her husbands last name. What you do run into with any government agency is an occasional hard head. As a natural born USC and a veteran of a foreign war, I don't put up with that #######.

Whatever it took for a name change on your USC certificate you have for SS, either a marriage license or a court order, that is all you need, and your old name based on your SS number is in the system, better well be, as they are taking out a huge chunk of your paycheck with FICA taxes. I get very angry when dealing with incompetent government employees like the last one I dealt with, ask to speak to someone with intelligence and wouldn't leave until that happened.

I updated my citizenship and new address yesterday and did not encounter any problems at all. I had my card in my new married name so I did not bother to bring the Petition for Name Change that was stapled on my Certificate. I just have to wait for my new card in the mail.
