Apologies if I haven't written this in the right section.

Hope someone can advise me.

My wallet was stolen last week and had everything in it including my green card, drivers license.

I reported it to the police and called Immigration but they didn't take my name or anything and just told me to fill in a I-190 and pay the fee.

I went to get a new drivers license but they wouldn't accept my I-797 as proof of residency until someone was there to check my status (apparently who checks it was on holiday till Monday 29th March). So I have waited since Thursday (26th March) and they said someone would call me Monday and let me know. Will the I-797 be sufficient to get the drivers license? I have waited a couple of days to see if my wallet had been handed in and have not filled the I-190 yet. I desperately need my license to get on the army base here. I no longer have a military ID as it was stolen in the wallet and I can't drive anywhere to sort this mess out. Just wondering if tomorrow will be straight forward. My husband is in Iraq and I know no-one here. It's only me and my daughter of 1 so I have no-one to help me even drive to the DMV..nightmare.

I hope you made a photocopy of all your valuable ID cards. If not, Im sure you will next time.

Life is uncertain, plan on it.

Thanks for your reply. No I didn't take copies of any cards, Was I supposed to? Oh no...

The woman at the DMV took photocopies of my passport, marriage license, I-797, husband's orders. That is all I had.

Can they refuse me for not taking copies?

Should I have filed I-190 before now or is it going to be ok when they call Immigration to check my status?

Confused and fed up here.

Thanks.

a little too late, but once you have a state issued ID there is no longer a reason to carry your green card with you...the replacement fee for your green card is pretty steep, as you will unfortunately find out...sorry to hear this...sounds like you might have to wait til that person gets back to DMV to check on your I-797...and I don't even know if that will be enough to get a copy of your DL....in my state they require a birth cert. and SS card at least....

Forgot to mention I had my birth certificate with me but she didn't even look at it or copy. Stupidly, I had my SS card in the wallet as I'd been on post to see about childcare. I went to get new SS card but they won't issue without DL but have gave me proof of a SS number to give to the DMV. I'm in Texas if that helps and if you have any other info. Thanks for your help.

I am so sorry about ur present condition.yes you shd have photocopied those. I am sure some senior people here will write something. These people at drivers license dnt care what happens to you. You have to go there again and again and poke them to do the thing. Call them and find out if that particular person is there or not. Make an appointment and go see him. Has police given you a copy of the report u registered with them. U shd show that at the driving license bureau. If necessary make an info pass appointment. I have no idea about the I-190, I am hoping someone wd help you soon here. I did some research for you . Read these ....

Thanks for your help.

The police said the report takes 10 days but I managed to get a report number. The woman didn't note it or anything.

I was hoping it would be a case of them calling Immigration and getting proof I was a resident and then I'd file the I-190 and pay the fee etc.

Thanks for the links, very appreciated, I am going to look at them now.

Can't someone from the military assist you - you mentioned being on post - ask somebody there maybe Legal Advisor's personnel to assist you. I'm sure they took copies of your documents when your husband registered your in DEERS.

Best of luck to you!

I'm so sorry this has happened to you - getting someone to help you from the base is a good idea like the previous poster said.

a little too late, but once you have a state issued ID there is no longer a reason to carry your green card with you...

GC holders are required to carry their GC at all times...of course whether you choose to do so or not is up to you, but legally you are supposed to always have it to prove your immigration status, so there is a reason to carry it. If the OP doesn't know anyone and her husband is away, I don't blame her for carrying it.

Removing conditions:

10/9/10 - Package sent to Vermont

10/13/10 - NOA1 date, received 10/18

Thanks for your replies. I have been waiting all morning and am half way through the afternoon for the DMV to call and have called them twice but no-one has called me back yet to go there and get the license. One woman said it may even take until tomorrow if I don't hear today. What's going on???! They haven't mentioned photocopies and have said they are calling Immigration to check my status.

I am going to try calling Deers and asking them if they have a copy of card just incase, thanks for the suggestions.

Very frustrated as I have missed an appointment so far for my daughter and it looks set to miss another I re-scheduled because I can't see about replacing Military ID.

Sorry, this happened to you. I'm sure you have/are in the process of calling your bank, credit cards etc. But I just wanted to mention a few precautions to help prevent identity theft. When you go to the SS office, do not request a replacement card, explain the situation, show them the police report and request a NEW SS#. Also, you should put a security FREEZE on your credit profile with each of the 2 credit bureaus (a Security alert will alert you to the fact that someone has opened a new account in your name, only a freeze will prevent them from opening an account.) Similarly, when you go to the DMV, do not get a replacement card, insist on a new License #.

Wow, I didn't know this... I just did some reading on it and you're right.. it is apparently considered a misdemeanor if you do not carry it with you.. bah I don't like that... I don't want to have the risk of losing it (and pay 290 dollar to get a new one) but I also do not want to have the risk of getting detained (which they are allowed to do (only if there is a reason for it according to the 4th amendment but yah, that's always easy to find for them with anyone)).

show them the police report and request a NEW SS#

There are very little people who were able to ever get a new SSN.. reason for this is that everyone could use this to clear up their bad credit history. I highly doubt this will work for the OP.

Thanks for the correction about getting a new SS#.

Nicola, I think getting a security freeze is a MUST, especially since you will have the same social security number.

http://www.suzeorman.com/igsbase/igstempla...ExpertiseID=120

This is a place to start reading about security freezes. You can call those 1-800 numbers listed. Remember choose a security freeze (not security alter).

Actually, it's $370 for a new card (with biometrics) - that's what they asked from me when the GC never appeared after 6 months (never produced). Never paid of course - not my fault someone failed to do their job.
