So when we got married my wife and I decided that I would take her last name as my middle name.

But when we tried to do this a while back, the Social Security folks told me that I needed to talk to immigration, and the immigration folks told me I'd need a court order, and should submit when I submit my I-751.

The time has come to submit the I-751, but I'm just a little nervous about changing my name when we are travelling to Europe in June. I have no idea how long it will take to change my name on a UK passport - and I'd hate to be travelling with different documents that have different names.

The change of name will be subtle - Sami Robert Butler Grover, instead of Sami Robert Grover - but I have no idea how ####### immigration can be and whether I might end up having trouble getting back in.

Any advice?

Is it what u really necessary and thats what wanna do? If it means so much to u and ur wife, YES U should change/add her last name.

Yes U will need to get the court order to do it.

BUT IF I WERE U, I would wait til U get the Citizenship. THAT TIME U'll be able to changed to any name u like coz on the filing paper will ask what name u want to change it to.

Just Wait til that time, just one more yr left for u to file N-400.

Maybe it's best to postpone the official name change until after you become a U.S. citizen. Then, immigration and passport issues won't arise. Right now, all of your identifications are cumbersome to change, to say the least.

well, it's just a middle name, so you should be fine. My GC can not hold my entire name, but it's close enough to my passport (they don't worry too much about ur middle names when u travel).

however, once u change it, you should have the court order with you until you straighten out any other documents that were not changed. It's similar to the situation w/ a women's name change. The SSA also won't change your name unless you have immigration documents changed first.

Yes, to change a partial or complete name you need a court order and is not as simple as to just show up in a court.

Social security and Driver's license need that immigration change it first so then they can follow.

Because all of that is link to your immigration status.

I don't know about middle names...but in here the last name is what it counts.

In what that can affect it depends in how you use your middle name. If you use your middle name to book a flight, then you may need to show why is different than in your passport, etc etc.

Good luck.

Bring your marriage certificate with you when you travel...

Colin and Jess,

You can travel anywhere in the US without a passport. You will only need your driver's license, credit card, money, money, and a little more money. Have fun and congratulations on your future marriage. Depending on age, you may need some type of identification to get into some places which require you to be 21. You can take her passport and your marriage license if you want.
