A Brooklyn assemblyman introduced a bill yesterday that would require patrons to pay the state $10 every time they visit a strip club or topless joint.

Felix Ortiz, a Democrat, said the flesh fee could raise as much as $500 million for victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse and child prostitution.

States have increasingly turned to the adult-entertainment industry to help close budget gaps in recent years.

Texas lawmakers are fighting to save a similar $5 "pole tax," which was struck down as unconstitutional by a state judge.

Gov. Paterson, facing a $14 billion budget deficit, has proposed a tax on Internet downloads that would also apply to Web porn.

"The bottom line is, we have to protect people who have been victimized by unscrupulous individuals, and we cannot continue, especially in this economy, to have government pay for everything," Ortiz said.

It would be great if a government official finally did something about the human trafficking problem in New York. I find it sickening that we allow human slavery in a city that prides itself on the idea of equality and justice.

I don't know. I'll bet some of them are, but I saw this program on human trafficking on MSNBC a couple months back. On the one had they had a woman that was practically kidnapped and beaten at times. That sounded like slavery. On the otherhand they had had this segmant on the parlor girls in San Fransisco. They interviewed one girl and it went something like this:

"What are you doing here?"

"I don't want to be here. I came to here to become a teacher"

"So how did you end up here?"

"My father became sick in China, so I needed the money for surgery. I'm not a citizen so this is the best way I can earn the money"

Okay so she is giving up her dreams and working a suckass job she'd rather not do because she needs the money. That doesn't make her a slave. That makes her an American.

the best part of the story is that the father is prolly not really sick at all. he just wanted the money so he could take his buddies out drinking and messing with some girls, and believed that since he paid for his daughter's education and travel to America, that she owed him, no matter what she had to do to pay the debt.

think i'm being insensitive and what? i don't make this stuff up. it's what i saw when living in china. i don't make the news. i just write it.

I once read an article in the New York times that said in some cases,people are selling their daughters to these pimps,now that's just horrible.
