They call it chemical imbalance. Brain is an organ just like any other organ that can go haywire. Also the brain blood barrier that differs in people letting all kinds of junk in to mess up the brain.

bipolar is not a multiple personality disorder

answering your question, not sure if it exists. i know that bipolar is real and people might look like they have 2 personalities because they act completely different depending if they're in the manic or depressive episode.

i am skeptical myself..having worked with several..i think, it can be real but certainly when the film and book Sybil came out..there were many new cases..also, i think media reinforcement of certaind disorders leads to allot of self-diag, and like Cooley theory....what is reinforced and preceived as real becomes real in its' consequences..

As someone who often works with trauma issues, I do believe this diagnosis exists. BTW, it is known as Dissociative Identity Disorder now, not Multiple personality disorder. However, I think that media reinforcement has had its impact and I do not believe it is as widespread as the media has portrayed it to be.

Multiple personalities as well as compartmentalized personalities do exist. One famous example of compartmentalized personalities is Alger Hiss who lived one life as a successful State Department official and another as a Soviet spy. It was a similar case with Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames. This is extremely rare in the general population, but more common in criminal cases. This is precisely why witnesses make statements such as "I would have never expected it from him!" They knew the one personality and not the other.

It does exist and I've seen it 1st hand. It can be attributed to several reasons, but I know of one cases it was child abuse related, the mind has so much trauma it can take so it order to survive at time it switches mode. that person has 3 personalities, over time they died out now the person is much older but as a teenager they would come out when the person is under stress, once the person goes to sleep, had absolutely no recollection of what happened while the other personality took over.
